Recent changes in your taste
« on: November 02, 2011, 10:25:37 AM »
Have you experienced any changes in taste recently? This is solemnly according to guitar tone and gear and so forth and by recently I'm thinking the last couple of years or so.

For me it has been the following.

I developed a fondness for strat and tele tones. Funny as I used to hate strats.
I used to like my cleans really clean, but now I'm also enjoying a clean tone with a bit of hair to it.
Earlier I had a dislike for fuzzes, but the fuzz sound is really growing on me and I'm slowly being drawn into its fuzzy world.
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)

I've always liked "classic rock" guitar tones and "classic" (you might say conservative) guitar designs - Teles, Strats, SGs, Vs etc.  I don't think you'll ever see me embracing superstrats, EMGs or Floyd Roses.

In the past couple of years I've become more and more keen on the most basic, stripped-down guitars - Les Paul Juniors and Specials.  And it took a while, but I've grown to love the P-90s those guitars come with!  At the same time I've gone off SGs a bit - partly due to insecurities about the neck joints, Juniors are so much sturdier.

Just in the last few months I've started to re-kindle an interest in Les Pauls - I've always loved the look and the sound, but they're so thick and heavy.  But I'm getting over that a bit, and also getting a bit of GAS for the bling of a Les Paul Custom's ebony and gold...

There's one worrying trend - I'm starting to set my sights on ever more expensive models.  Haven't broken that £2k barrier yet, but it's only a matter of time.....  :|
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Sort of. I've always liked more "vintage" guitar tones, the ideal sound for me is ACDC's Highway To Hell. However when I try to play with something like this it never works for me and I always end up going for a gainier/more modern and compressed tone. Without the extra bit of gain it just sounds dry, weak and rubbish.

Been listening to a lot of Blur recently and its really made me want a Tele or at least something singlecoil! Making me wonder whether I should go for MQs or Riff Raffs for my SG...

Not really. Medium to high output humbucker into Marshall (voiced) amp has done it for me since at least 1999...

I've headed towards a brighter sound in general in recent times.  Not ear splitting, but zingy without being harsh.  With that in mind I've settled on PAF to hot-PAF humbuckers as my pickups of choice, in PRS guitars with nitro finishes for their feel and tone.  Yep, I now believe the nitro finish contributes to the overall tone.

Amp wise, I'm still over the moon with my Bogner Ecstasy Classic and I'm looking forward to getting its matching cab in the next few weeks.  I'm going to stick with the stock V30s in it (rather than adding my usual preference of Celestion Golds) as I think it'll give a bit of that extra brightness and zing I've started to appreciate when used at gig volumes.

I'm a big fan of evolution and refinement in tone, to me I've accepted that the journey never ends and that I can just enjoy the ride  :D

Heheheheh :)

i think my changes have been the same as many people's.  i started off wanting as much gain as possible, multi channel amps, high output pickups, and crystal clear cleans.  i've ended up loving single channel amps, low to medium output pickups, and just breaking up cleans.  i don't use a lot of preamp gain, rather i prefer to run the amp loud and get my sustain and punch that way.  i've also developed an appreciation for single coil pickups.

of course, now i've got the AFD, which is a gain monster!  we'll see how that goes :)

I seem to be liking a bit more treble recently. For ages there I really disliked it. Maybe my ears are just shot

Eleven years ago I stopped with pointy headstocks as my JEM FP didn't work very nice with a Rivera-amp. I got hooked by the telecaster. I discovered that this guitar is so versatile when you have a good amp and make use of the toneknob. The last five years - mainly bec of the coverband I'm in - I rediscovered strats. HSS-strats, bec of the versality. I became a real single coil-addict. They made me better play. I started to use less gain too. Now I favour the classic, say vintage guitarsounds. My pickups are all vintage(hot), maybe with exception of the Crawler, which has still some PAF-blood. For me vintage(hot) pickups make the tone bloom more. That doesn't mean I cannot enjoy heavy stuff and highoutput pickups. They're just not really for me.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

You're clearly not playing it loud enough :)

You need a single coil mattress to make single coil babies.

In the recent years I've come from don't liking Fender guitars, being just into metal and only-humbuckers-are-good to have a always increasing interest in Teles and P90 guitars, almost never listen metal... I'm way on the classic rock nowadays.
