which pu for gov't mule's / bonamassa's blues-rock
« on: November 06, 2011, 03:43:24 PM »
Hello,

this is a moment I'm looking and I have heard of bareknuckles. I often hesitate on pus for my guitar (I had emg hz, seymour duncan hb-108, paf 59, DiMarzio D-Sonic, evolution, paf joe, etc.). But I realized that the sound I'm looking for is none other than Warren Haynes' in "Slackjaw Jezebel" and "Forevermore". A good blues-rock with a punch, rough, warm, well-articulated, pulling sometimes for a stoner-blues/rock.
My guitar is a Lag Arkane 200ST with a basswood body, maple neck rosewood fingerboard.
I hesitate to be on a pair of "The Mule", a "The mule" in the bridge and a "PG Blues" at the neck, or a "The Mule" with a "Missipi Queen" at the neck.  I'm afraid that the Riff Raff will be to bright an aggressive. What do you think off?

Haynes = Mules in a Les Paul, tones will be (slightly) different tones in basswood, but I get Haynes-tones with ease from my Saint Blues mahogany bolt-on Mississippi Bluesmaster.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I've got Mules in a 59 Les Paul and can get Haynes tones with no problem. Mules are muscular, tight and woody and I would advise going for a pair rather than mixing and matching other pickups with them.  Amps are an important part of Hayne's sound too, he manages to get a really grinding plexi thing going on without it sounding too distorted or fizzy at the top end like so many others do.  I'm assuming you're not going to import a Diaz amp like he uses so I would recommend the Lovepedal COT 50 to help you get the crunch thing going on smoothly.  It's a great pedal, worth the money.
