What Difference Do Frets Make?
« on: November 13, 2011, 03:03:23 PM »
As some may remember, I refretted my Yam SG200 a short while ago.

It took a few attempts, but the last one went really well - however, by that time I was using much narrower and sorter fret wire - way more vintage - that what I was planning on using.  I always find jumbo frets more comfortable for my style of playing.

So - I've managed to make my guitar slightly less comfortable to play!

However, one thing I didn't really expect was the difference that I can hear now when I play it.  It actually sounds more vintage, if you know what I mean.  It sounds like a really raw, 1970s Les Paul, Kossoff-esque, if you know what I mean.  It definitely seems to have changed the sound in an unexpected, but really nice, way.

Has anyone else found this?  Maybe it's the contact that the strings are having with the fretboard now, I don't know.  But even though they're less comfortable for me than jumbos, I'd definitely think about using smaller frets again.

yeah i think narrower vintage type frets (say on a fender) are meant to sound a bit brighter.
