Neck Thickness

How is neck thickness measured? Is it measured from the nut to the back of the neck or from 12th fret to the back of the neck? Just wondering because I'm trying to compare neck sizes of various models eg Hamer Studio has a thickness of .900 and want to compare that to a Gibson Explorer or a Strat etc

They work it out at both the 1st fret and the 12th fret. From that, it's just a matter of connecting the dots

It is measured from the SURFACE of the fingerboard - in the centre - just in front of the nut
( I prefer to take the measurement just behind the first fret as some necks have a volute and it starts to get a bit fatter close to the nut).
The you also measure from the SURFACE of the fingerboard  to the back of the neck just behind the 12th fret.

I tend to shoot for a 2mm difference between 1st fret and 12th
So 20mm @1st fret ->22mm at 12th
or 21mm @1st fret->23mm at 12th

Of course you also need to take account of the shape of the neck, not just the thickness - it all makes a big difference to the feel.

As examples of typical necks, a new Fender Strat or Tele has a "Modern C" shaped neck and is about 20mm at the first fret, 22mm at the 12th. 
A PRS "Wide Thin" or Gibson "60s/Slim Taper" neck is pretty similar to those Fenders. 
PRS "Wide Fat" or Gibson "50s/Rounded" are chunkier. 
Most Ibanez necks are much thinner!
