Would have loved to have been old enough to see Deep Purple this fine night.(1974)

I absolutely love Blackmore's playing on that.

Shame about David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes though. They ruined my all-time favourite band.

I too prefer Gillan/Glover but thought Hughes/Coverdale played a blinder that night, also i'd put Burn & Mistreated up there with the best of Purple tunes.
Ritchies playing is stellar, though he could have cut the end bit of the solo and brought the band back in as they were pissed off with him, you can here Hughes shout 'Ritchie'.
Epic all round though, they were untouchable in the early 70's.

That's my favourite Purple performance of all time.
They're tight, Blackmore is on fire and no Gillan. What's not to like?

The bit where there's no Gillan.

Coverdale turned them into a mindless c0ck rock travesty, I don't blame Blackmore for walking out.

Wasn't it Blackmore who wanted Coverdale in the first place?
Sorry man, but I can't stand Ian Gillan. I think he did a great job on Sabbath's Born Again, but that's it for me.

I think my brother summed this up a while a couple of days ago when we were on the subject of Blackmore. Amazing talent, we're so lucky he didn't go so far up his own arse he ended up playing lute or something.....  oh.....

What?!  I couldn't disagree more!

Coverdale - and Hughes - made Purple into a bluesier, funky band.  Stormbringer is a pretty lightweight, soulful album - it sounds more American, which is a bit weird considering everyone in the band was still British...  :?  But "mindless c0ck rock"?  Nothing like it.

I don't think Coverdale started making "mindless c0ck rock" (apart from his lyrics, that is) until Whitesnake made it big in America.

I've heard every Purple album. Burn's a decent song, Stormbringer's a decent song, the rest of the Mark 3 stuff is pish. I'll take Machine Head, Made In Japan or Depp Purple In Rock over those any day.

EDIT: I tell a lie, I've heard every Purple album with Blackmore. Except the one with Joe Lynn Turner.
