Played a nice Ibanez X series 7 string guitar today
« on: November 25, 2011, 02:15:27 AM »
I know it's rare for me not to be talking about my own stuff but I had this brought in by a Norwegian girl metal guitarist who calls herself by the stage name of "The Commander in Chief" and has a nice Ibanez endorsement.

Anyway - this is what she brought in and at first I thought I might dislike it in the same way that I really dont like the BC Rich Beast and the Dean Razorback - both because they feel really clumsy.
But this was well balanced and worked well - a bit like a BC Rich Stealth - the Rick Derringer/Chuck Shuldiner(Death) one

It does have shades of Jackson Warrior about it but it felt better than any of the Warrior guitars that I have handled
It also sounded really good -(this was a thru neck prototype version they only made for NAMM apparently)
I would love to try a 6 string version....maybe I should make something in this  vibe - the maple neck through construction and ebony board sounded great - I'd have to have Miracle Man pickups in it though....

Strangely enough her other endorsement is with Duncan and it was fitted with a Duncan Custom which sounded fine once we raised it closer to the strings, but I felt that there were lots of BKP pickups that would have sounded better in  this guitar for the style of shred that she likes .....Miracle Man or Ceramic Warpig both spring to mind.

And for those of you who prefer to see pix of skinny Norwegian chicks who play metal guitar and sing opera - here you go:

The design is from Norway too? Sort of viking-axe?

Well, the guitar looks like arse, but given it's an LACS or something like that, it's probably pretty amazing to play.

The girl on the other hand. Wow!

I like on all levels - don't think that the guitar is fugly...  it's got a certain charm.

As has she.

OK, let's get all the Phwooooaaarrs and Fnaaaarrrs out of the way... yep, pretty lady.  What brought her to sunny Croydon, by the way?

The guitar.... I actually think looks pretty awesome.  Wouldn't buy one in a million years, but some thought has gone into the shape and contouring, and the colour is just beautiful (....did I say I'd stopped talking about the owner?)

As far as the guitar goes - I think I was more taken with the feel and playability than the look - although I liked the look .
Some of the curves were well thought out as far as how the guitar was able to rest against your leg - either sat down or standing up which certainly isn't the case with either the Razorback or beast.

It actually seemed well thought through - even if the angular  bits on it seem like they are trying to be a bit gothic for the sake of it.
The long upper horn does actually help keep it nicely balanced too on a strap
I would happily take the aspects where the curves make it sit comfortably and see if a slightly more graceful redesign could be achieved.

The quality of the guitar was very good too - very good for an Ibanez.
I liked the colour as lurid as it was in places - kind of reminded me of the Emerald Lion I made

What brought her to sunny Croydon, by the way?

She's UK based & living not that far away and was looking for someone who could sort out the guitars fretwork and my name popped up as a good place to go - so she and her manager paid a visit.

OK, I admit it, I like that guitar, it ticks several of my boxes: neck-thru, trans green, volume control positioned nicely out of the way, volute.  Is it a slightly longer scale length (26½" perhaps?)  it looks longer than 25½.

Nice camera work Jonathan & glad to hear that word is still getting around how good your fretwork is... :)

Yeah - the paranoid cover that she did seems not to be quite as good as the other track which I heard a clip of on Youtube (I was unaware of her until yesterday anyway)
