P90 virgin seeking advice
« on: November 27, 2011, 04:29:46 PM »
Well, I have to confess that I've never experienced a guitar with P90s  - but sooner or later I will have to rectify this.

So I'm seeking advice on the best way to go about this; is a humbucker-sized P90 like the Mississippi Queen close enough that I will get the 'real' P90 experience from them, or can I only get that from a genuine P90-sized P90? The MQ route would have the advantage that if I could try them in one of my existing guitars and if I did not like the results could go back to regular humbuckers.

I guess there is also the option of trying a cheaper non-BKP pickup first just to see if I like the general feel and tone of a P90, though I don't expect anyone here to recommend that...  :P

I have lots of P-90s but I haven't tried MQs (or Duncan Phat Cats or Gibson P-94s for that matter).

However, as I understand it the MQ is constructed very much like a "real" P-90, sounds right and even has the advantage of some shielding and noise reduction due to the metal cover.

I think trying the MQ is a good idea, go for it!

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

The MQ is higly praised here, ok, you wouldn't expect anything else on this forum. Nevertheless, BKP's are famous for their balance, dynamics and clarity. I would call it sort of 3D-tone. I have several BKP's now and don't regret any of them. Used to have Dimarzio's etc...

I will heartily give a thumbs up for Mississippi Queens!

They sound just great - and just like a P90 with the extra benefit is that the metal casing also helps screen out some hum.
