An experiment: Randall cab gets "Alternative" speakers.
« on: December 02, 2011, 08:32:58 AM »
Now, this past monday the speakers in my Randall 4x12 went and died on me. I'm gonna buy a new cab in any case, but just for shites and giggles I figured I'd have some fun with the randall one. What I'm gonna do is install 4 of these:

As you can see, the impedance is the same, and at least to my ears, the specs don't look that dissimilar to a regular guitar speaker. The kicker is though, that it says it's used for "Bass purposes" in PA's it seems. Through the company I work for, I'll be able to buy at faaar below half price, effectively letting me buy a whole set of 4 for less than the price of one Celestion V30, eg.

Your thoughts on this lads? Personally, I think the idea is just daft enough to maybe work.

It might be awkward (and im kind of guessing) but it might be handy to compare the frequency curve against some usual choices. Apart from the sensitivity and frequency range etc of the speaker which might look the same as other guitar speakers, there could be a substantial variation in frequency response I guess, though I don't know what would effect that? dust cap size? cone material? voice coil construction? Interesting idea though. i hope it works out. thats just my feelings on it.

Didn't Paul Kossoff use to use Bass cabs as he swore they gave better more even overall sound

At one point in time I was using this old Acoustic branded 4X15. It was sort of weird in it's design, too. 2 of the 15s were pointing straight ahead and the other two were in the middle facing each other. Sounded good to me for playing, but was horrible for micing. This one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hard-Find-4x15-ACOUSTIC-Model-408-Speaker-Cabinet-BIG-Dog-/330624780407

I don't know about the speaker you've posted, but I do know that the Eminence Delta Pro 12 and the Electro Voice EVM12L are popular in guitar enclosures (the EV is actually a guitar speaker, the Eminence a PA speaker). Let us know how you fare with those speakers you've ordered.

If I was in the mood for an experiment, I'd use these as bass drivers and add some tweeters and crossovers to the equation.

In addition to a 4x12" guitar speaker cab, I also use a 2x15" + 2x8" bass speaker cab that I threw together. I like the sound I get from it, If you can put it together on the cheap, I say go for it :)

The material of the cone will have a large effect on the sound of the speaker-- too flexible, and it becomes undefined in the lower freqs... too stiff, and you'll get ringing at higher frequencies! A paper pulp seems to be a pretty good compromise for the cost-- obviously you can get speakers made with kevlar, hemp, aluminum etc. and they will all have different rigidity.

The voice coil will have an effect too-- it can be over or underhung (the amount the voice coil protrudes outside of the magnet). If I remember correctly, overhung will give you better bass response, but will affect the highs. The opposite is true also.

Many different ways to change the speaker, but only 1 person can say whether it sounds good to them or not :)
