it arrived on saturday and i fitted it yesterday; awesome tone! really happy with them, they blow those factory Burstbuckers right out of the water. only problem now is i need to replace the other Burstbucker because it just can't keep up with the MQ's power... big thanks to all at BKP!

The Burstbuckers are, in theory, supposed to be PAF-like, right? If you want to stay in PAF-style territory, the Mule would be my pick. I can't remember how hot the MQ is, though I should think a Mule would go well with it. Er, details anyone? :)

Mules sit with Mississippi queens very well, because of the power of a P90 they have no problem balancing with a Humbucker.

i've got my MQ in the neck and it sounds awesome, i play a lot of clean lead and soundscapey arpeggiated chords and if i use my tone control and volume to moderate the pickup, i can get anything from a nice middle rich chirp to sounds that would melt butter...

you guys reckon a mule? they sound pretty cool and what i'm looking for - i'm not really one for modern sounds. has anyone got one in the bridge of their LP? what does it sound like?

I think lots of people must have a Mule in the bridge of their LP -- very popular LP pickup! :)

I have a Mule in the bridge position of my Epi LP custom, sounds great. You need to have a good valve amp cranked to really appreciate its tone though.

You could always put a Mississippi Queen in the bridge-they're calibrated so the neck and bridge MQs are wound differently.The bridge has more muscle and is a touch fatter too.Give me a call if you want to talk it through.

I have a Mule bridge and MQ neck and they work fine - the MQ, however, is somehow fatter and wider than the Mule. If I was doing it all again I would go with two MQs - that's not to say I dont like the Mule - it rocks, but I never imagined the sound of the MQ would be so awesome.

yeah, i kind of want to highlight the fatness of the MQ so i don't really want to put another one in the bridge and uniform the sound, if you get what i mean... i'll try The Mule out and if it falls a little short, i might take a look at something else

If you ended up wanting to step up from the Mule, the Abraxas is sometimes considered as a "Mule+": hotter than true PAF, but with a similar vibe. The Crawler is also in that range, perhaps with a bit more grunt than the Abraxas. (I just got back my LP with Crawlers a couple of days ago, and have been having fun whenever I steal a few minutes to plug in and noodle away :)).

I didn't mean to criticise the Mule - the sound is tighter and a bit crunchier than the MQ - and being in the bridge that tightness and crunchiness means great trebly power chords and leads. It also goes into classic PAF distortion quicker - the MQ stays clean for a lot longer (although without mud). I got the Mule (Alnico IV) for a Peter Green tone -but find the MQ hits that sound perfectly whereas the Mule is more in the AC/DC spectrum of tones. That could be my guitar, but it is instructive as to the difference.

So by all means go Mule - you won't regret it.
