Best bridge pickup for my SG?
« on: December 18, 2011, 01:58:40 AM »
Hey guys i am looking for a pickup to replace the burst bucker in the bridge of my SG, the burst buckers are just too trebly and maybe lack some punch. I play hard rock and heavy metal, basically GnR, Priest, Ozzy, and Sabbath and everything on those lines. Which Bare Knuckle Pickup would be the best for me, there are so many it just gets confusing. one thing that i want is to not get muddy and i don't want a really trebly sounding pickup.

I'm thinking about replacing the bridge pup in my SG and I'm leaning towards the Black Dog which is supposed to have nice fat mids.

The normal SG advice is to go for something with low output or high output and avoid medium output pickups. I have no experience with the Riff Raff myself, but it should work really well in a SG. It is on the bright side though so if you want something less trebly there's the Mule which is a great all rounder.

@Philywilly33:

SGs are known for being somewhat picky about which pups they get along well with. From "traditional" forum's wisdom, the safest choices are either real low-output 'buckers or really hi-output 'buckers - or P90s.

In the low-output range, the classic choice is Riff Raff, but while truely punchy, they do have a lot of hi-end sparkle too  which may not fits your bill.

Richard mentionned the Black Dogs which are supposedly (never tried them) more beefy and a bit more powerful, but they might start to be a bit too hot (or not hot enough) and could sound muddy, depending on your SG - now IIRC someone here do have a BD bridge on a SG, you may want to search the "players" section for clips.

In the hi-output range, the Warpig is known to work fine with SGs if you want a really over the top deep br00talz monster tone - never tried it myself so I just can't comment.

My own SG has a Alnico Nailbomb bridge - a somewhat risky "hit or miss" choice according to Tim. It turned out to be a hit as far as I'm concerned despite my SG being rather plain / dark sounding but I seriously can't tell if it would work on your own SG, nor even if you'd like tones I get from mine which you may find a bit too "abrasive" - it's throatier than the Riff Riff, with more low-mid growl, but with still a fair share of hi-end.

FWIW Slash is known for using rather low-output AII PAF-like pups - IOW something close to your burstbuckers - but the LP and SG are different beasts. I guess the Warpig would be closer to Tommy Iommi's own custom pickup. I don't listen much to Judas Priest so I'm totally clueless about what gear they use.

My 2 cents...
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Ceramic Nailbomb could do the trick, tight, good mids and won't mud up.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
