I sort of agree, yet I sort of don't. I frankly think this disgusting little scamming troll should have had some sort of comeuppance way, way sooner. I know, it is fundamentally distasteful to flat out cheer when someone dies, but I just can't help myself here. I will quote a bloke from the SD forum, since he sums it up quite well:

My condolences go to his family, friends and anyone who held him dear.

He was somewhat of a firebrand, and pissed off a large number of folks, along with amusing many others.

His website was always eye candy with a large number of pix of cool guitars – I have enjoyed looking at it in my time.

His rants page has been both eye opening as well as cringe making in equal parts, but often warranted a look to see what he said.

The treatment of customers in his store is pretty mixed - I'm sure many were well looked after - the only first hand accounts I've had were less than stellar.

His theft of other small makers guitar designs and claiming them as his own ......well - I'll let your own moral compass decide that one for you.

the only direct experience i have of ed is a pearlcaster which came into the local shop.  It cost the owner a hell of a lot of money especially after import and shipping

it looked pretty, but as far as potential it was on the level of an MIM strat.  we actually realised it had a few major problems which needed sorting.  I can forgive uneven frets  and bad relief after a guitar travels from Nevada to Burton, at least i cant blame ed for that.  but when i say it had the potential of an MIM strat, i mean that is as good as we could really make it without changing hardware, and it took a lot of reassembly to get to that level.

(I mean nothing against MIM strats, met some nice ones in my time, just trying to put it into price perspective)

It's always the bad stories that are likely to surface most, obviously. We all kno we're far more prone to complain than to compliment service or products generally. But even if he was total scoundrel he hardly warrants "good riddance" type posts like Davey's appalling "OOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! !!!" garbage above. A shady local businessman might be a prick, but he isn't Kim Jong Il.

If unethical businessmen need posthumous condemnation, let's save it for people like Paul Bulcke; people behind companies heavily involved in REALLY awful practices. Not guys that shifted overpriced guitars and didn't provide the best after-sales.

Why should the fact that this guy died change our perspective of him? He was a despicable business man that took advantage of people. I am not happy that he died, but I'm not crying in my beer over it, either.

I find this revisionist/feel-good/bleeding heart mentality displayed by many to be more disturbing than Roman's business practices in some respects. Roman deliberately acted in a controversial manner and I am sure he had a public and private face, but the bottom line is the guy was SHADY. I had several dealings with him when I was really into ESP/J Frog guitars. I would never take ANYTHING he said abut any guitar at face value. He tried to rip me off on two occasions.

If everyone automatically gets 'tagged out' and gets a free pass when they die, our already severely dubious history will get even more skewed.

He WAS Hitler of the guitar world, as far as i'm concerned.
Let me ask you this.. How would you feel, when you bought a Masterbuilt Custom shop Fender Tele from him, try to get a part that broke from him and he wouldn't or couldn't give it to you, because of whatever reason. You then turn to Fender, asking them for the custom guitar specific bridge for the Custom shop tele, serial number 965235.. and they would tell you that guitar did not exist? He has forged everything from BC.Rich, Moser, Jackson, Fender Gibson.. etc etc you name it, he's done it.
Or this.. You design a guitar.. very specific shape. You go to a manufacturer and have it made. You ask that manufacturer, that IF someone is interested in that guitar, they can not make it without your approval. The manufacturer agrees. Several months later, you find YOUR guitar. Pictures of your EXACT guitar, that YOU took, on HIS $%&#ing website, advertised as IN STOCK .. Roman did get a foot up his ass for that one though.. Still didnt change his practice. He did it to several other people.

And here I'd have hoped everyone would be capable of being grown-up enough not to drop the Ultimate Baddie comparison. Good god. I did actually mention Kim Jong Il incidentally, clearly implying I didn't think well of him now he's dead. Maybe you missed it in your reactionary flabbergastery.


I feel no different about about Ed Roman now. Nor do I think anyone else should. Indeed doing so would be dishonest to your own feelings. But there's quite a difference between saying "He was an arsehole" and saying "I'm glad he's dead" and if you can't see it you're an idiot.

EDIT: On googling, I'm thoroughly disappointed I didn't coin "flabbergastery".
