SG GAS!

So many of you will know as having a somewhat schizophrenic approach on guitars... I will never decide on one, but seeing as now is the appropriate time for getting one and my current gas is for an SG, I think I may seriously get one :P

<Don't read this mini story if you don't want to>
So my younger brother is in his school band and one o the girl guitarists has her dad's vintage/gigged SG Special to play with (It still has uncovered Humbuckers though) and it got my gassing badly! The really hotrod barebones look was so amazing!

So now I don't know whether I want an SG Special or SG Standard... Another big influence for getting an SG is Thom Yorke when he played at The Basement, so cleans are my main priority actually... Which should I get? I actually like the look of the uncovered pickups

I was never fond of the look of SGs when I was young but years have passed by and I love them now so I get the GAS thing that is going on. Personally I like covers but I'd say go for it.They have great necks in my experience.

Okay cool, so would you say get the Classic to "be safe" because you can't go wrong or wish you got better? Also do the Pickup Covers on Gibsons make a noticeable difference in tone? I know that BKP compensate for covers but without compensation does it sound muted and lifeless?

Well I'd say if you love them without covers then go for it. It aint the end of the world as you can always change the pickups. I don't know about Gibson pickups having different tones according to the covers- as you say, BKP are compensated.

I like the headstock and inlays on the standard better, so that's what I'd go for.

That trans black looks awesome too!

I would take a standard, I like it a bit more then the special, as far as I like SG's, cause they don't fit my style of playing at all. And I don't like how they hang to the body somehow. Not for me, but maybe it's perfect for you. I like the looks though.

So how big of difference in playability is there? What is the difference? Thought it was just aesthetics

SGs tend to be quite neck heavy because the body's so small and light. To offset that a bit, most SGs have a thinner neck to try and reduce some mass in that area. That said, I played a '64 SG Junior a few weeks back that had an incredibly deep neck though it was quite narrow. Didn't like it at all. Other SGs I've played have felt better. Try before you buy.

The standard looks a bit more vintage, that's what I like. For the rest I don't know much about SG's. As Andrew says, try before you buy. Sometimes we get in love with a guitar that eventually doesn't feel right in your hands.

no-locking nut? bad idea... I'll take a kahlered 80's SG they go cheap and will stay in tune.

You couldn't really use a locking nut with a Stetsbar, it doesn't have any fine tuners at the bridge end.

I have no idea what it feels like to use, but the advantage over a Kahler is not having to rout holes in the body.
