Any help on choosing pickups for V100 les paul

Hey BKP'ers

Right my problem is I know im never going to get the supreme versatility I want in a single set pf pickups, I have a Vintage v100 les paul copy. Im looking for a set (calibrated set or combo of two different) that can cover glossy cleans, that really awesome smokey blues tone and a half decent metal tone.

Is it a stupid idea to put a hot p-90 in the neck an somthing like a crawler in the bridge?

any ideas? The body is mahogany with a rosewood neck.

Hi and welcome!

The idea is not stupid at all. I just wonder if the Crawler isn't a tad to warm in a Les Paul. It's already quite beefy though balanced in my swampashstrat. If you want nice cleans, a good blues tone and a pickup that will do metal (with right amp and maybe the help of a pedal) you could consider Mules. I have them in an mahogany bolt-on Saint Blues Mississippi Bluesmaster and they're very versatile. They rock for sure and are very open and articulate. If you like a little more punch and edge have a look at the RiffRaffs. You could also pair a Mule with a Mississippi Queen-neck. Both are alnico IV and should work nice together.

yeah I don't know too much about the whole balancing tonewood with pickup out put, I've just come off a 4 year acoustic only trip. An awesome, I was looking at the riff raff im a sucker for that hot vintage tone. The amp im looking to get is the Blackstar ht-5r; I had a blast an love the diverse tonality at such low volumes (bedroom player lol)

Also i was thinking of coil spiltting the riff raff, for the extra tones. Does this in any way affect the humbucker tone when not in coil split mode?

Yep, I'd recommend Mule or Riff Raff too. I have both. I think of Riff Raff giving me a tighter tone. If I do venture towards metal (we're talking pre '83 or so here, that's as far as I go!), then the Riff Raff is what I reach for myself.

I also have Mississippi Queens (hot p90 in a humbucker size unit). I tend not to mix-and-match pickups so far, but I'm certain that an MQ neck would work well with either the Mule or Riff Raff bridge.

On the coil tap front, I wouldn't have thought it would affect the humbucker tone - or at least not so that any of us could hear it.

Yeah, I'd go with that. The riff raff is much appreciated even by high-gain players, but it's definitely a vintage voiced pickup. If you need something "more", you should at least consider the Emerald. I heard it in a Les Paul standard and it really struck me - possibly one the most versatile pickups I've ever heard.

 cheers, yeah the riff raff sounds awesome on the sound clips. The emerald could be good; the metally tone im looking for is that sort of megadeth hi-gain sound. Aha this is the reason i went acoustic for so long gear = dorrah I do not have lol

Hey Zatoichi.

The other day i played Brows Abraxas loaded PRS and while having that vintage rock type vibe it was also fantastic for 80s type metal stuff also.

Up until this i thought i had exhausted all the BKP's that interested me but now i have another set to buy so that also means another guitar to buy!
