Unpotted Mules for power violence/grind/hardcore?
« on: January 06, 2012, 10:59:54 AM »
I've been looking forever for a pair of humbuckers for my dean usa hardtail custom, and the best clips i've heard are of a pair of unpotted mules. The problem is that i've dabbled in some very heavy genres, my last band for example was a hardcore/power violence band, and i'm concerned about the microphonics. Now, i dont play that kind of music all the time, i usually play some weird mid gain alt rock stuff, jazz, prog and some blues, but you never know what music you'll be playing in the future. Is heavy, noisy music possible to play on unpotted mules if i'm quick with the volume pot when i stop playing or will everything just turn into a screechy blur with tones not getting through at all?

For reference, this kind of music and beyond:

I that case I would go with potted Mules, they still have plenty of mojo. You could even think about alnico Warpigs. They would serve the heavy genre, but clean up great and can be used as jazzpickups too. Some jazzers use them.

potted mules still have plenty of mojo I agree!

I think i'll get a pair of unpotted ones, so far it's the only bkp's i've heard that not just sound sweet, but holy-$%&#ing-ballfondlingly-sweet! Though money is a concern, i have to decide whether i get a bgf50 set or this first, but whenever i get the pair i'll post a converge cover or drive like jehu or something to end this discussion once and for all :)

I believe Tim uses unpotted Mules too and has not much trouble with feedback. Maybe he has a trick to prevent that.

I ordered a pair of unpotted mules last week and had them installed two days ago, and wow, awesome pickup! Clear and creamy, but also full of bite and power, a lot more than i expected. Anyone having doubts whether or not mules can do metal rest assured that they have plenty power to do all kinds of metal, I've even tried some grind and djent (really). The thing is that they are so clear that you can stack a lot more boosters and distortionpedals than usual and still retain a definition without getting mushy. Up to and including metallica tones are a piece of cake with them if you have a good amp and/or distortion pedal, with an additional booster they can easily go grind, djent or swedish death metal on your ass! They do easily feedback, but if you're quick with the volume pot that should be no problem.

Holy hell!!!! What is it with you swedes and musical talent? It must be the "folköl" and inability to get hangovers from it :(

I'm sorry but you've been mislead, folköl-hangover is a very real thing, you just have to make sure you get at least 4 six-packs before you try it, and you're ready to go :)

I just played some converge, and had i been a more juvenile person i would've said the shite was very cash, but i'm not, lets just say the emg tones you can get out of them are very satisfying!

Haha well :P Never had too much of that stuff :P Im quite often in sweden, since i have a lot of friends in Skåne. But i usually export some danish goodies for the poor brother people.

Could you please try and record some raw tracks, so i can hear the pickup myself. Im considering to make myself a warmoth jazzmaster some day, and that thing would need pickups too :)
