And therefore I want BKs for it.

I have a spare miracle man (well, I will by friday), so thats the bridge sorted.

What about the neck?

I'm going to try this a little differently to normal: rather than go militantly after a sound in my head, I'd like anyone that feels like it to post what their favourite neck humbucker is and why.

If anything said strikes a chord (ha ha) with me then I'll take it into consideration!

Failing that I know what I'll go for if I dont get any better ideas (Miracle man. Duh).

The guitar is a 70's yamaha SG 200, which I beleive is all mahogany....?

P.S. If I want to take the black covering of the miracle man I have, how would be best to go about it? (sheet black may not be the best thing with a sunburst SG!)

Yeah, I noticed that, dave! I'd be up for something like the holy diver by the sounds of it: I'd like to get hold of a mellower BKP, as they're supposed to be more responsive. And the responsivness of the MM and warpig is impressive enough! Failing that I'll go for my normal requirements for neck HB: metal with some clean capablity. But I'm open to new sounds here!

Is the crawler your fave, then? Why for?

I just got Crawlers installed in my LP, and they definitely seem live up to Tim's description of being very versatile, sounding good with blues, heavy rock, and metal stylings.

And I love the neck pup! It's DC 7.6K Alnico IV (same as used with the Abraxas), with a very sexy smoky thing going on. Even just running into GarageBand's "Classic Rock" amp preset the tone is pretty fab. Ramping up the gain, you can go pretty metal, but thing stay smooth and very responsive.

I know the Miracle Man neck is Alnico and perfectly capable of dishing out tones that are not a million miles away, but of course the MM neck will start off more compressed/saturated than something like the Crawler. (As an aside, isn't the Cold Sweat neck basically the same as the MM neck?)

It's hard to pick a favorite. All the other pickups do exactly what they're meant to do. The Crawler is the real all rounder. It copes with everything I've thrown at it. Ok, the MQ's do better rockabilly and the Pig does better chuggin' metal but the Crawlers do everything in between those styles.

I haven't produced anything really worthy of posting in the Players' section, though last weekend I started sketching out a new song using my Crawler-loaded LP. Here's a link to an MP3 hosted on my web site: http://www.carlaz.com/music/Colour_Out_of_Space.mp3

It's all a bit rough, but the opening section of power chord riffing shows off the bridge Crawler's muscle pretty well. :) And that's just with the bog-standard GarageBand "Classic Rock" amp sim preset -- still don't sound too bad, really :)

The rest of the 5 or 6 minutes of MP3 is me scrabbling around with the rest of the arrangement and/or repeated sections; there's definitely no need to listen to the wobbly, error-laden, place-holder guitar solo noodling that crops up eventually! :oops:

Beside my Gibson LP + Crawlers, the rest of the instruments are my Rick bass (also using GarageBand amp sims) and a drum track programmed in Doggiebox for OS X with ns_kit7free drum samples.

I'll have to do something decent for the Players' section eventually!
