Me and my sister bought a cheap drumkit between us, as she wants to learn and I like to play em (not as much as guitar though obviously :P ). They dont actually sound too bad I cant stand cheap cymbals! I couldnt find a good drum forum, so I was wondering if anyone here knows of some good cheap ones to get? The drum kit at school has Paiste 402's (crash, ride, and hi hat) which I really like the sound of, so thats the kinda sound I'd like but if possible, without spending so much!

What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine?

With the drum machine, you only have to punch in the rhythm once.

Tom, as you probably know, the quality of sound with symbols depends on how much you pay by and large. The cheapo ones sound like saucepan lids. Zildjian aare generally reliable and Paiste also seem to be ok- sorry, I cant offer much more than the obvious advice.

Yeah I know cheap ones sound like that, my hi hat and crash sound like saucepan lids :lol: I guess ebay is the best place to look out for bargains, I dunno what models are regarded as "best" for rock though.

You can pick up a set of Pearl cymbals for pennies, especially on eBay, and their good value for money, don't worry. A very relaible rock purchase, and superb for a starter pack. (I play drums on the side.)

Oh I've heard Pearl arent too good (from our very own indy) but I've never heard any so I cant tell.. I've only heard Paiste!

Pearls are fine for what you seem to want. Unless youve got £200 to spend on some average Ziljians, which would be much better, but obviously more than the kit. When I said for pennies, I was referring to eBay - make sure you ask whether there's any damage to each cymbal if they don't say - so they're not traditionally supa-cheep.

Yeah I just want a good all round set for a general rock sound, not so much bothered about a ride yet but will do later on. So long as they dont have the shitety cheap clunk sound that mine have! The crash is so dull, I want a bright CRASH! not a CLONK! And the hi hat - I want it to go tisk tisk!

Also what are the CX-500 series like? I think my mate actually had the hi hat in this series and I remember liking it..

They look fairly decent. Ask about any possible refunds, should there be some other damage (i.e. lots of wear) that's not visible. Also, if you haven't bid before on eBay, set yourself a limit and put in that bid if you can 45 seconds before it finishes. If you're lucky you'll beat the programs people use to snipe bids that do roughly the same thing. Good luck, if that's what you go for.

What's hard about bidding? So long as you time it right, it's just point and click. You'll spend a bit more if you just go for Buy It Nows, fool.

Anyway, I always think of Zildjian as The Cymbals, though Sabian (which split off from Zildjian some years back and is a fierce competitor) are pretty generally as good to my inexpert ears. Of course, mad drummers argue constantly about which is really better (just like mad guitarists will :)).

Bonham used Paiste, didn't he? Can't have been all bad, then. On the other hand, Bonham could have played a trash can lid and made it rock. :)

Drumming is fun; I've plunked myself behind the kit sometimes at jam sessions, and while my technique isn't much, I've got rhythm and a decent enough sense for the song (and that took Ringo everywhere! :)). Wish some of the actual drummers I've played with had that! Though nothing lifts a band like a proper good drummer .....

I keep thinking it would be fun to learn conga or something. :) So many instruments, so little time. Ah well!
