Bridge pick up for an ESP Eclipse (hardcore/metal)
« on: January 27, 2012, 12:21:20 AM »
Looking for a bridge pick up for an ESP Eclipse II, I play metal/hardcore (http://www.myspace.com/lifeboat519), I'm the lead guitarist but I switch between rhythm and lead a lot, so I'm looking for the clarity for playing 5-6 string chords in high gain with an ENGL Invader, and having a nice lead tone that will cut through the mix well. I need good chunky-yet tight bass response for that hardcore/metal breakdown sound.

As far as I can tell my options are between the Aftermath, Nailbomb and Miracle Man. I was just hoping for some advice on which you think would compliment the type of tone I'm looking for the most. My rhythm guitarist has an Aftermath in the bridge position of his Ibanez S guitar, its a really thin body guitar and I'm not exactly sold that it's the best suited pick up for a thicker body ESP Eclipse II or for the leads I will be playing, so I was hoping the Nailbomb (I'm not sure which the ceramic or alnico) or miracle man may have a less sterile sound when paired with the Invader.

Also, how much do pickup covers affect their tone? Since my guitar is the VB eclipse I want to get gold pick up covers.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Ohh okay, thanks! Does it cut through the mix well? I was reading in one of the other threads that it has a more pronounced low-mid range which I guess Tim told the thread starter is not ideal for cutting through a thick mix, that was my only concern about the Miracle Man, because otherwise it seems like it would get the big sound I want for big chords and breakdowns, while also having a good lead sound, I just want to make sure I can cut through over the mix when we're playing live.

Was it the thread I started by any chance? I was debating this with my Les Paul

Yep it was your thread! I did some browsing before creating a thread to find out as much as I can before asking for an opinion. Have you made a decision on what you were going with?

The miracle man can definitely cut through the mix and the lead tones are really fluid and amazing.

Especially if you get the neck pickup too.

Both the NB and MM are great pickups and both should work well. The NB remindes me more of John Petrucci, especially the lead tones, and the MM more Zakk Wylde (no surprise I guess), George Lynch, early Slayer.

I think the MM is great for classic Swedish death metal sounds. After listening to your song lifeboat, I think it would be the better choice.

Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I decided to go with the MM as I thought the Aftermath would be too surgical for me. I like that sound were you feel the guitar in the pit of your stomach, rather than in your face. I will pobably consider getting a C-Bomb at somepoint though, as I really like the sound of it. But that will probably be for more Progressive Metal. Although I think the C-Bomb's Metal clip sounds a lot like Scar Symmetry, so you never know :)

im just installing a rebell yell in the briddge and a vhii in the neck of my guitar...my needs and style differ from your but mach sure of these things for that guitar.  You should get a 53mm bridge pickup and be aware that bkp cts pots wont fit in that guitar without a little drilling or sanding out! thats all

Hey thanks a lot guys, it seems to be pretty unanimously pointing towards the Miracle Man for my bridge pick up. I loveeeeeeeeee the raygun covers from the Rebel Yell, since my guitar is black and gold I think a gold ray gun cover would look so sweet. Any idea if those covers would fit a Miracle Man? Is there a way to order just the raygun cover without buying the Rebel Yell?
