What is the best BK pickup for a clean sound
« on: January 29, 2012, 11:05:35 AM »
I need to let the amp or the amp modeler (Pod XT) do most of the overdrive or breakup.  If I can feed it fairly clean that would be best.  Would like to buy a set so that I can have a little more drive in the neck and I would like to get a chimey sound out of them.  This will be going in an Epiphone 355 Limited semi-hollow with ebony fretboard.
Thanks,

Telerocker

Pickups transport tone, they don't distort. I guess you want lowoutput: Stormy Mondays.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

So what you are saying then Telerocker, is that the output level is the only thing that is different between pickups basically.  They don't color the tone in any way,  they just transport it correct?  So any pickup that is say, an  8.4 ohm would transport the tone the same whether it is a BK pickup or an epiphone pickup right?

He said that the pick-ups don't cause distortion, not that they don't affect the tone.

Stormies are great, they have lots of detail if that's what you're after. Perhaps mule's if you want a little more "drive".

It wasn't a mistake, it was chromaticism, I swear.

No, the voicing (and thus the character) can be different, mainly due to the type of magnet, the used wire and the amount of turns used. I expressed myself not totally 100 percent, I meant that pickups translate the vibrations of the strings into tone. Higher output  pickups (like the Crawler I have) do usually have more compression in the tone. The higher output means that the preamp of the amp will get hit a bit harder then with vintage pickups, with the result that the amp will distort a bit earlier. Pickups don't deliver distortion by themself.

Mules are great too. I have them in an all mahogany bolt-on Saint Blues Mississippi Bluesmaster and they are warm with a  lot of crispiness without being harsh or tinny in the trebleregister. Stormies are little moore scooped. For chimey cleans they will do perfect.

Thanks for all the responses guys.  This helps out a lot.  I'm thinking about getting the mules as I do like a little clean overdrive.

Correct. If a pickup does, it is broken.
