Item 1.

Rock band called Religion of Tomorrow. I say rock...sorta alt-rock-light-metal grunge kinda thing. Anywho, matters not what you call it, hope you like it (and like it if you like it!). Item 2.

I just engineered and mixed the vocals to this, its a girl called Sarah-jayne Taylorson singing to a backing track (that I had to mess with a bit, I cant help myself). I figured I'd show it around because shes rather impressive and deserves the attention. The lass is...17 I think, maybe 18, shes one of my mums pupils (mum is a vocal coach). Shes got a scholarship to AMDA and is generally very good. I was gonna put her through a guitar amp and pitch shift her down an 2 octaves, but figured quite a lot of people would shout at me. Religion of Tomorrow-- I like the song 'Half Sick of Shadows', nice work with the vocals in the calmer middle8-ish section. I think the bass could be pushed a little more-- there's an area just below the guitars that could fill out the bottom end-- not by much, but it'd give the guitars a bit more oomph as the kick is higher up the registers.

Sarah-Jayne: The vocals generally sound good (obviously helped by a good singer!), I think it could be de-essed a little, especially on the reverb send-- and personally I think the reverb should be a bit longer, or perhaps adjust it-- sounds like it's a little too loud then decays very quickly; a softer, slightly longer verb might help with the esses. And the last bit (1:48) has some gating issues or something like that, as there's noticable clicks on the vocal and on the verb.

Vocal-prominent songs are always the hardest to do I find, but it sounds good (aside from the midi-trumpet, but that's not your fault ;) )

Hopefully in a few months i'll have something to post too, as i'm going into the studio to do an EP with a band :)

Shag, you can download their songs I believe, if you want to. There will be a CD, I'm told; I'll let you know when its all sorted, but I have no control over that.

Cheers for the comments oli. The level of de-essing is something I backed and forthed with on that track, because it was so bare, nothing to mask the vocal in that range, and the vocal needed to be as high as I dared as its a vocal showcase. Time was a factor, however, so it is what it is (and she, her parents (that payed) and mum are all very happy with it....but that doesnt mean the next shouldnt be better, no?). The 'clicks' at the end I'm aware of, but buggered if I can find what the hell caused them, its a mystery to me; its in the raws. Its interesting that your comments were about completely different things than I was actually concerned about for that track (some audible distortion/oversaturation of the preamp at the loudest points, the compression, and what I feel is bordering on a closed/airless sound to the vocal): more to think about, eh? Good comments though, thanks.
