Aftermath Bridge, but what in the Neck?
« on: February 21, 2012, 07:15:52 AM »
Through a long consideration process, I've pretty much landed on choosing the aftermath for the bridge pickup, for the tight low end and the clarity in dropped tunings (dropC), even though I considered the warpig for quite I while, I think the aftermath is the way to go. The new problem is that I have no clue what to stick in the neck... For a while I was planing on getting a sustainiac in the neck, but I think I'm skipping it for now, and going for something with better tone and sound instead.

I'm pretty particular with tone, and I'm not looking for something thats overbearingly boomy or 'creamy', I'm pretty much looking for something with the same 'basic' characteristics as the bridge, but with some added low end and depth.. If that made any sense at all, then some feedback or suggestions would be great! (:

So far i'm mostly considering just getting the calibrated aftermath neck, as that would seem logical to me, but any other suggestions or comments?

If you fancy the same characteristics as the bridge a calibrated Aftermath might be the right way to go. But what kind of guitar are you using; what body and neck woods? Also: what are you planning on using the neck pickup for mainly? Cleans? Solos?

Its a Schecter Hellraiser C-1 FR with mahogany in both the body and neck, along with a rosewood fretboard. And i think my applications for the neck pickup as going to change a lot depending on what my band's creative processes demand, but mostly clean melodic stuff,  but i wont exclude the chance that their might be some distorted lead playing as well.

Taking into account that Mahogany is a middy wood you might want a pickup that has more in the way of bass and treble to round things out a bit. Taking a look at the current line up it seems that the Cold Sweat and Miracle Man would deliver in this regard. The Cold Sweat has more high end and the Miracle Man has more mids scooped out.

I'd also say that since its a Floyd rose guitar, the wood loses a bit of its characteristics, so I'm getting a brass big block installed to give it a bit more body, but thanks for the advice (:

I just thought I'd reply to this just in case you didn't know. Regarding the neck pickups, their EQ is different toward the bridge's EQ. With the Cold Sweat, I find it is more mid boosted to get that fluid shred tone. But as you can see from the EQ, it says its high in treble, and low in mids. I just thought I'd clear it up incase anyone gets confused.

Another good example is, the Holy Diver's neck pickup is apparantly brighter than the Nailbomb neck & the Cold Sweat neck (according to Tim), but if you went by the EQs on the site, you can see why people wouldn't expect it. I think BKP should start having an EQ for neck pickups too.

The CS-neck is praised a lot here for it's fluid solotones.
