It is the holy grail for pure classic/hard rock, if you have one of the two following:

an actual 67-73 1959 that hasn't been modded,
or a modern 1959 amp that has been built or modified to replicate it exactly

You can get that sound out of a 1959slp reissue, but only with quite a bit of changes - the Output Transformers (heart of the amp) are cr@p and need changing, and it'll need decent tubes and be running through the right speakers.

Something like a DSL might be able to produce plexi like tones, but it'd never be able to get that 'magic' that a decent 1959 would. There's so much going on in those circuits that they end up being "jack of all trades, master of none", even when the power tubes are maxed out. The key to that coveted "plexi sound" is the pure signal path with a decent OT and tubes.

Is that a simple task? BTW I'm a sucker for anything that has a reveiw that says 'Page', 'Angus' or 'Van Halen but especially 'Gilmour'.

believe it or not Scott Ian used Plexis back in Anthrax's glory days. I agree with what you are saying though.

from what I can gather not all Plexis were alike. there are some dogs out there. at least with the reissue you know quality control is much better.

I'm almost sure ive narrowed it down to a 1959/1987 plexi(assuming theres no huge gap in tone), a JCM800 and I still haven't ruled out the Hiwatt based off of good reveiws

depends what you mean by 'glory days' - he was certainly using Silver Jubilee heads together with JCM800s on Among The Living & State Of Euphoria.

Dan Spitz from Anthrax is now using a Metroamp plexi, that was fitted with an extra gain stage. 8)

I'd go for a JCM800 every time 8) but that's MY taste. for yours i'd have a 1959

I think I've ruled out the hiwatt because I do have a reasonable budget. So I'm about 70:30 favoring the plexi. I was also looking at the david bray and splawn websites and that seems like a good idea to get a master volume added and maybe some tone mod if I do get either. Anyone know anything about the two?

If you're after that definitive "plexi" sound, David Bray is the best route to go. His are the only mods on the internet that aren't really "mods", but center on getting the best "plexi" sound out of the amp at decent volumes instead of changing the fundamental sound of the amp.

If you're after a more modern take on the sound with a signature sound of it's own, the Splawn might be better. This will be more focussed on preamp distortion, as the mod removes the cathode follower and uses it as an extra gain stage.

Yeah vintage is more what I wanted, and a free MV withe the rework. And maybe some push/pull treble and gain boost would be awsome.

One last question, since the 1987 has 2 less power tunes than the 1959, is there a noticeable tone difference?
