Prs SE upgrades questions
« on: March 02, 2012, 04:27:07 AM »
For those of you familiar with the SE line of PRS guitars, all the SE models come with cheaper tuners, a cheaper bridge, and cheaper knobs.

First I need to know what tuners could fit in the guitar without having to drill new holes if there is any.

Second I need to know if the PRS USA made bridge will fit in place of the SE one.

Anyways I hope someone knows any of this information here and I want my guitar to look and feel better because I bought it used and the parts are pretty rusty and i'm also wondering how much it would cost to refret the guitar with med jumbo stainless steel frets and if there's any risk in doing it.

Have you got a line on a geuine PRS bridge? because as far as i know they won;t sell them as after market replacements. but yes, the SE bridge should be exactly the same as the USA bridge in terms dimensions.

Also, do you really want an SE? they're great guitars and all but depending on the model and after making all the mods you want to make it would be just as cheap to buy a second hand CE from ebay. I've seen them come in at £900. You get the US bridge, tuners etc, PRS pickups (which i change anyway as i don't like PRS pickups) and generally all the workmanship of the US line. I don't know your opinion on bolt on vs set neck, but past a certain point its really just a tonal difference rather than a cost saving constructional one. Some day people are going to realise how good CE's are and the price will go thru the roof.

There you go, times have changed! I believe Callaham are selling some PRS repros at the minute which i would personally choose over the real deal PRS bridges. They might be a little pricey as the only did a small run.

PRS USA replacement parts are incredibly expensive.  That bridge (assuming it fits) costs almost as much as some SEs!

Tuners are easier - many sets of Gotohs, Schallers or Grovers will fit without modification, so long as you get the ones with the angled screw "tab" at the corner.

Ah, didn't realise we were talking about dollar prices, yes, £900 would be up there after converting to dollars plus shippping.

Here's three that all come in under $2k

I don't think the USA and Korean parts are interchangeable.  I think from memory the trem can't be swapped.  I would imagine the bridges are metric (SE) and imperial (USA) so they won't fit.

Note the USA PRS bridge from TonePros is a separate part.  SE and USA bridges cannot be swapped over:

I'm 99.9% sure the actual AVT2 bridges are identical, the only difference is that one comes with metric studs, the other imperial.

Although I could be wrong.

I have no idea whether or not the Korean tremolo bridge is interchangeable with the US one.

Good points Phil, it may just be the bridge posts and inserts.

They're not. I swapped out the bridge on mine for a Tonepros (recommended) and they were different parts as the SE was metric. Mini Grovers were a straight swap for the tuners. Don't bother with the Grover lockers, theyr'e a pain in the arse.
