Rebel Yell in Music Man Axis Sport?
« on: March 09, 2012, 02:33:23 PM »
Hi Guys, new to the fourm! Been reading alot, and searching. Anyone have experience w/ the Rebel Yell in their Music Man Axis Super Sport? I really dig Steve S demo of the RY? Just wondering would  I get a silmiar sound if I put the RY in my Super Sport?

Thanks in Advance

Basswood body? If the guitar had a dark voice the RY will work. Keep in mind the RY is quite bright and cutting and the BKP that is quite sensitive for the right height.

Ash body. I was just tossing it up between VHii and the Rebel Yell. If I went w/ the VHii. What  should I go w/ the in the neck pickup?

In ash the RY could  be a little bright. I think a calibrated VHII-set might suit your needs better. I have the VHII in an ash Fender American Series HSS-strat and the tones are stellar. The tonespectrum is balanced with enough bass, good mids and quite some highs, but not shrill in anyway. Leadtones are amazing, overtones jump out with no effort. Cleans up great too. The neck is praised here on the forum, but I have no experience with that one.

Cool Thank you for your input! I have the Seymour Duncan 78 in a HSS strat. Alder body that I really like. But heard great raves about the VHii. I'm looking for a really good neck pickup for my HSS strat though. What do you recommend in a single coil, that would complement VHii for a HSS strat?

I used to have a hardtail Axis Sport, ash body, maple neck.

It had the stock Axis pickups which I understand were similar to (but not the same as) the DiMarzio Tone Zone and Air Norton.  Normally I find the Tone Zone horribly bassy and muddy, but it wasn't at all in the Axis Sport.

So - to get to the point! - I would guess something from the BKP range with a fair amount of bass and lower mids is going to work best.  Maybe the Crawler (hot vintage) or Holydiver (more modern)?  I certainly think the Rebel Yell would be too bright.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

For your HSS-strat: that depends a bit on your taste. I have two HSS-strats, one  Fender, one (a bit higher grade) MXG custom strat (made by Patrick Eggle). The first one is ash, the MXG swampash with maple neck and ebony board.
Fender American Series: VHII and two Mother's Milk with autocoilsplit for the VHII in fourth position.
MXG: Crawler and Irish Tours. Crawler splits per push/pull knob, so I can use the Crawler full with the middle IT too.

Mother's Milk: early sixties Frusciante-vibe. Woody, open, bright but bu no means brittle, neckpickup has a wicked tone with the right amp. I favour this one through my Rockerverb/2x12 cab. Takes drivepedals/ampgain very well.
Irish Tours: hotter then the MM's, like an overwound version, more bass and warmers mids then the MM's, less glassy. If you roll the volumeknob a tad back it cleans up close to the MM-tone. Takes drivepedals/ampgain very well. Searing leadtones on the neck possible.

If you want a middier neckpickup check out the Slowhands.
