Pick ups for a Gibson SG - Metal Drop C - Advice please!
« on: March 13, 2012, 10:32:36 AM »
Hello all,

Just looking for a bit of advice from anyone that has put BKP's in a Gibson SG...

At the moment i'm looking at the Aftermath or Painkiller for the bridge, and a Cold Sweat / Aftermath (n) for the neck.

I'm mostly looking for this to be a metal based guitar, but obviously any added versatility is a bonus. Has anyone experimented with these or any other BKP's in this guitar? Anyone find anything that fit especially well?

I currently have stock PUP's in it, I believe they are 490T/R's... they are ok, I just can't seem to get the brutal grind that I'm after.

Looking for the August Burn's Red / Kill switch Engage sort of sound. I'm currently playing through a Blackstar HT5 + an Orange 112... if that makes any difference

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

:)

Hi and welcome to the forum!

With the Painkiller and the Aftermath you are looking at the most appropriate pickups for the intended tuning. The Painkiller is said to be brighter and higher output than the Aftermath, which is said to have its strength more in the center mid spectrum.

Are you playing in a band? If yes you may need a bigger amp. The amp has a lot of influence to the final tone, and a 5 watt amp will hardly cut in a loud metal band.

Cheers Stephan

Thanks for the reply Stephan.

Yes, I have read that the Painkiller is brighter. The one thing that worries me is that the SG is know to be quite trebley, so I don't want to exacerbate the problem / character of the guitar.

I must admit though, when listening to the clips online I think the Painkiller sounds absolutely incredible!

I'm not gigging at the moment, the Blackstar is just for bedroom use.

With this in mind, is it still worth investing in pickups like this just for bedroom use?!

Cheers

brutal grind = C-pig. Your treble wont be overwhelming with it either =)
Your music will never be as hard as this!

sgs aren't trebly
they're very middy and have less high end than les pauls, but also a lot less bass
mid heavy pickups tend to sound quite nasal and dull on SGs, in my opinion, or too "beamy" and saturated in case of brighter higher output ceramics
like a boosted wah pedal or something (like a dimarzio pickup  )
I'm sure I've heard good reviews from forumites using painkillers in SGs, but that would be my last choice for a SG
what you need is a miracle man for the extra punchy low end and cutting top end
pinch harmonics really jump at your face
it's the best for that style and tuning, in my experience
c-bomb as a second option
c-pig for the brutal grind

about the amp, you could try something small, but punchier and more open sounding, like a jet city 20
it's quite cheap and sounds a lot like a big higher gain amp, more natural than the HT5
boosted and using the volume around 4, it sounds a lot like KsE stuff
that setting for band practice volume, of course, but  sounds good at lower volumes as well

I have the A5 Warpig in 2 SG's right now. My style is a mix of metal/stoner/doom/hardcore, and I tune to drop-C. I waited way too long to give the Warpig a try. I'm very happy with it for heavy stuff. It pushes my amp just right. I would imagine the Ceramic Warpig would be great for your needs.

I got an awesome metal tone out my SG when I had the Miracle Man in it. The pickup works great with that mahogany neck & body.

Thanks for the replies guys. Still yet to find someone who has used an Aftermath an SG...

The most difficult thing about buying these pickups is figuring out which one to get!

I can't see a reason why a Painkiller wouldn't work. It's tight, it's bright, it's very hot - sounds ok for an SG to my ears.

I had pk in my sg faded for a year. After try miracle man and warpig, pk was the one o like most for my taste, and matched very well my les paul with holy diver.

For metalcore I'd recommend the miracle man.

Henriquepaiva, what sort of sounds would you describe your taste as being? What sort of bands would you say fit?

Cheers,

I play hardcore metal stuff, with drop C# tunning. All the 3 pickups sounded great in sg. Pig is obviously more aggressive, MM is tighter. But painkiller was aggressive with tight bottom at the same time, also the high mids cut the mix better, specially in a two guitars band.
