Nickel and Chrome aged? What do they look like?
« on: March 18, 2012, 04:42:16 PM »
Hi guys

I'm looking to buy an aged Flat 52 neck for my tele.

Could anyone please clear up the differences between chrome and nickel?

I want to order asap and would much appreciate pics!

Thanks

Ant

I am not quite sure what exactly you wanne know.
Pics of the aged nickel covers can be found in the gallery forum.
Chrome covers do to my knowledge not have an aged option (would look shitety I think), but pics of the regular chrome cover can be found in the gallery too.

Never really looked into it though, cause I donīt have old guitars.

in terms of aging, chrome doesn't really age as dramatically as nickel does. you can get a few micro-scratches, and the plate can wear slightly, but generally chrome stays looking very similar to new as it ages.

CHROME

NICKEL

Does that help at all? :)

You'll see Chrome has more of a mirror finish, where as Nickel is less shiny and reflective. The bottom left picture is brushed nickel. It's a very nice finish. You can also see the brushed finish on the Abraxas page on the BKP website :)

Pretty much what the guys have said.  The big difference is that nickel tarnishes - quite quickly - and chrome basically doesn't.

So if you look at, for example, an old Strat, the nickel-plated tuners and saddles will have a dull grey patina but the chrome-plated bridge and jackplate will still be shiny.  You sometimes see see chrome hardware where the plating has cracked and flaked a little, but even that's pretty rare.

When they're new, they're both shiny and silver - but nickel has a slight hint of yellow in the colour, whereas chrome is blue/white like a mirror.

For your Tele, the original pickup will almost certainly have a chrome cover so chrome would be more "correct" - but it's up to you.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

For what it's worth, the non-aged nickel cover ages quite quickly as well. I had a nickel cover MM and after about a year it looked aged, unlike the chrome cover Black Dog, which still looks basically new.

truth
raw nickel is even faster
it looks like it's 35 years old in less than 2 years

Hi Eric,

Is that the Cold Sweat neck there in the bridge? Looks awesome.

I can give you a recommendation on what to put in the neck (hint, hint).

Cheers Stephan
