Baseplate or hotter bridge pickup?
« on: March 21, 2012, 03:47:45 PM »
Hi!

I'm new here, so: Hallo, my name is Martin and I live in Vienna.

Playing a beat up 76 Strat with lovely Mother's Milk Pickups in it. I really like those PUs - I've been through a lot of different pickups from cheapo to boutique and these nail the tone in my head the best. Love their woodiness and chime. Just a great pickup set for vintage style Strat tones.

Anyway, I'd still like to have a little more oomph, more grit, more dirt from the bridge pickup while still retaining the woodiness of the MM Set. I'm not searching for a gain monster, mid boost or a humbucker type of sound, only for that little extra kick - still sounding like a (slightly fatter) singlecoil, though.
Neck pickup is almost levelled with pickguard, bridge pickup pretty close to the strings already.

Would you recommend a baseplate? Can these be retrofitted or do I need another pickup?
Or would a hotter pickup be better? (maybe a slow hand on bridge?)

What do you think?

All the best,
Martin

you can get a baseplate retrofitted - might be worth a go! you can even do it yourself.

BKP have just put up videos showing comparisons with Strat pickups with and without baseplates - have a look on their Youtube page.

that youtube video is really good. best demonstration i've seen of how it affects the sound.

Can the baseplates be bought separately to pickups in the accessories section?

Thanks for your replies! I'll try a baseplate first! All the best, Martin
