Warpig vs. Nailbomb in my setup
« on: February 06, 2006, 10:25:25 PM »
Hey all,

I have a question. I've been checking out the soundclips for various BK pups, and the ones I seem to like best are the Warpig and Nailbomb. Most Nailbomb clips are in a Ibanez RG (insert type here), which if I am right, is Basswood, and was recorded with a POD. Now I am wondering, if anyone has any suggestion on which pickup would sound best with my current setup. I am more of a lead player for sure, and I sweep pick a lot.

My setup is:

Charvel Model 6 (this is where the pickup will go into, this is a maple neck thru guitar, with Poplar body wings, rosewood fretboard and a kahler flushmount trem)

Marshall JCM 800 50 watt combo (I turn the gain up to 8 orso)

Boss SD-1 (I throw this overdrive pedal over my already distorted amp)

Can anyone describe what these pickups would sound like in my current setup? This would be much appreciated

I forgot to add, I play almost all style's of metal when it comes to rhytm. Mostly Metalcore ish though (think As I Lay Dying, and Shadows Fall)

if you play a lot of lead, the miracle man might be worth a look too (i hear it's good for shred). And the cold sweat neck pickup is also meant to be good for shred. EDIT: MM would be great for metalcore (stuff like KSE and trivium), although the warpig might be better for shadows fall, as they use emg85's in the bridge. I'm not familiar with "as i lay dying".

I can't really comment though, because i haven't tried them.

I'd say have a look at the Miracle Man as well. Metalcore bands usually use EMG's and Miracle Man's are a good EMG replacement. I'm into a similar sort of music and have ordered the MM's for my next guitar (currently being built).  I've got Nailbombs in my current guitar and think they'd be more suitable than Warpigs because they can clean up nicely as well.

Ah, so basicly your suggesting to check out the MM, but the Nailbomb would be a good choice to? Cheers

I'm gonna check out Tim's stickied Nailbomb thingy right now :)

Yeah I think MM would suit you better, although I'm really happy with my Nailbombs. I think the Warpigs could be too raw sounding for what you want to achieve. Hopefully you well get a response from Tim or Steve.

I think a Miracle Man might be too bright in your guitar and setup. I'd go for either a Nailbomb or a Warpig. The Nailbomb is more vintage sounding than the Warpig. The Warpig is more modern and ideal for chugging rhythm.

I was thinking the exact same thing about the MM being to bright, especially in a maple neck thru guitar, with poplar body wings, and poplar is already a really bright type of wood.

Anyhow, I've been listening to some more Nailbomb clips, and I must say, I am astounded. The Warpig sounds a bit...generic, but the Nailbomb really is like something I've never heard in a pickup before.

But I am still doubting between the Warpig and Nailbomb. I indeed hope I'll get a reply from Steve or Tim >_>

I forgot to mention, an ideal compromise for tones, would be Alexi Laiho's tone (Children of Bodom). Like the songs Kissing the Shadows and...well everything from Are you Dead yet?

:) Cheers for the input guys, I'm almost done here!

Check my poplar body jackson review here on the board. The MM is not to bright! i can asure you about that. Compared to my EMG 81 the MM is nice rounded, fat, bassy simply the best pickup i have ever had. The setup you have will work well with the MM. Can't speak for the Nailbomb though.... the next purchase for me to my RR1.

Good luck

I think either Nailbomb or Warpig would sound great and as the rest of the guys have pointed out, the higher gain Warpig will have more grunt whereas the NB is a little more old school. Also I don't think the Miracle Man would be too bright-if fast bass response and seriously tight chugging is your thing, nothing will beat it 8)

I think some of the clips you have mentioned ( Ibanez + Pod ) with nailbombs might of been mine. I think for the bands you have mentioned either the nailbomb or warpig will be really good.

My guitar is mahogany with maple/bubinga neck, which is neck through. If you want any particular type of clips just ask.
