NPD: BKP REBEL YELL!
« on: March 27, 2012, 04:09:00 PM »
Hey there!
Long-time lurker, 1st time poster, just decided to create an account to share my experience with my new pickups!
First of all, I wanted to thank everyone on the forum for sharing all your knowledge about everything BKP, it went a LONG way in helping me make my decision.
Well, where should I start? My upgraded guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Traditional, and i had '57s in it. I run through a MB Stiletto Deuce and an Avatar Cab. I like playing hard rock mostly, in the vein of GNR, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Sabbath, you get the picture. I also like playing some softer stuff too, like Cream, Free, etc. So I need a pickup that can handle the heat, but cleans up to a low-gain grind. Also, I play rhythm guitar only. I don't solo at all, so I was looking for a pup that shone in that aspect. I narrowed my  choices to Mule, Riff Raff, Rebel Yell, and Nailbomb. After alot of research, I decided that the RY's would suit me best as far as versatility and overall tone.
I went a different route than most people, an aged nickel neck and an aged zebra bridge, I just LOVE that look! Got them put in, and had them coil-split as well. When I plugged in, I was blown away by how clear they sounded. Trying to play chords on a gain setting always produced cr@ppy, mushy and muddy sounds with my old pups, but with the RY's there was none of that! The drive and crunch from the amp was nothing I had heard from it before, it was pushed very well by the pups. Turning down the tone and volume really gave off this vintage tone that I really loved, and using them in single coil got me closer than I thought to a Gilmour-style sound. With the neck, I play mostly cleans, and there was again this clarity that I had never heard before with my cleans. Also, the presence control on my amp really never changed my tone at all no matter how high or low I had it. The Rebel Yell's gave all my EQ knobs new life, and especially on the clean channel and maybe with my OCD turned on the dynamics really shone.
Ladies and gentlemen, the Rebel Yell is THE real deal, no doubt about it. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anybody looking for a kick-ass pickup with serious attitude. Thanks and rock on! :guitar4:

allstar100595,

Congrats on the new pickups!

I recently ordered a set of Rebel Yells as well and I am glad to hear your report about the tones you are getting.  Seems we have similar reasons for ordering the RYs.  I also like to play classic rock to hard rock/metal as well as some nu metal etc.. When I began researching pickups last month I also considered the mule as an option.   From the way you describe the tones you're getting it seems that we both made the right choice.

I play lead and rhythm and I feel the RY's are going to really shine with the leads. I'll let you know.  My pickups should be here in a week or so, I'll post my feedback when I get them installed.  Any more info you might want to share would be greatly appreciated.  Enjoy the new pickups!

Cheers,

Tom

Yeah, that sounds bout right.^^ Pretty much thought the same when I got my first BKPs (RY bridge, Mule neck, IT middle).

The are just bloody amazing. Glad but definetly not surprised that you like them.
My short review of the RY bridge still remains: They ROCK! Nuff said.
And it is amazing how well they do everthing from pop punk to really hard modern metal (Red Seas Fire as the best example).

One thing I always mention when someone gets them though (you might have heard that already, but I wanne make sure you know) is that the RY is very sensitive to height changes, more so than any other PU I know.
So if you think you got a great tone now, fiddle with the height a bit (everything from very high to very low works in its own way, though I prefer rather low), chances are rather high that it still can get quite a bit better.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Thanks for the replies guys! Good to know some people with similar tastes and demands chose the same pickups. I've never seen a bad review of them(though there really aren't bad reviews on any BKP ) found it kinda hard to dig up some real good info and reviews on these, gotta spread the love more! Tom, keep me updated on you RY's, love to hear how you like em. Kiichi, messed around plenty already and found a nice range both high and low, so I'll definitely try to find my sweet spot!

I've done about 20 gigs with my RYs now and have just about figured out my optimum amp settings. Like Allstar says, they make your amp respond differently. Same with the guitar. The Gibson pups I had before responded indifferently to tone and volume adjustments on the guitar and basically just sounded worse if I turned anything down.  The RYs have opened up a new world of tonal options.

I use a 30w amp (Cornford Roadhouse) and have played a couple of larger pubs recently where I've been able to get the power section cooking and this is where the real magic starts to happen. Just wonderful.

Richard, I bet they sound INSANE cranked! Unfortunately won't be jamming until the weekend when I can really unleash the beast.

My 2010 black bobbin Trilogy Suite matched middle and neck pickups are more sensitive to height adjustment than any pickups in the world...now you know. :P

WhiteRam, I haven't looked much into single coils, but I have heard the RY is the most sensitive. I'd be interested in hearing the Trilogy! :D

+1 on RY, make you play differently. Probably the only pickup I´ve had so far that works with everything I plug it into.

I even like its clean just straight to the soundcard :-P

You know, even though all BKP'S are great, I've heard complaints about all of them....except for the Rebel Yells. I did ALOT of searching on this forum and others, and everyone who's had them or has them don't really have anything bad to say about them.
