I completed a Jim Room Tele last year - I kept the body but had a custom paint spray job, had sims Custom shop make a neck (superb neck 12 -16" compound with rosewood baord).
As for the pick ups - I binned those awful EMG's and stuck in a set of Holy Divers with a push pull coil split.
They brightened up the tone and split sound great especially the neck.
This guitar really rocks for high gain but sounds very sweet on clean with the coil split.
My only complaint is the weight is a little on the hefty side for me.
(by the way - I tried a Tone Zone in the bridge and it sounded muddy and fizzy to me!)
I'm starting another tele project - swamp ash body - heel contour, tummy cut, hardtail start type bridge, humbucker and single coil neck. This time I'm going to try a Crawler in the bridge!
