bandmaster reverb blowing fuses
« on: April 04, 2012, 10:26:39 AM »
hi all,
went to rehearsal last night, plugged in my 76 bandmaster reverb and nothing happened. checked fuse (blown T2 amp 250v) replaced fuse, blew again.
it recently ( 6months ago) had under gone some major repair work, the circuit board had become conductive so that has been replaced along with a good few components. so i'm thinking that part of the amp should be ok?
it did take a bit of a roll in the car last week.
could it be the rectifier tube?
what other common symptoms can make the fuse blow like that?
help please. got a gig next weekend and i don't think i'm gonna get it to the repair man and back in time.
 cheers!

Hi,

You could do the following:

Remove all power and preamp tubes and replace the fuse. Does the fuse still blow?

a) If yes, remove the rectifier tube. Does the fuse still blow? If yes, there is a short in the wires coming from the power transformer or your power transformer is bad. Take the amp to a qualified technician.
If the fuse does not blow, replace the rectifier tube.
b) If no, replace the preamp tubes. Does the fuse still blow? If yes, there is a short somewhere - take the amp to a qualified technician if you do not have experience with working on amps.

If the fuse does not blow with the preamp tubes in, put in one of the power tubes. If the fuse now blows, the power tube is most likely bad. Try a different tube in that socket. If the fuse then still blows, the socket wiring of that tube needs to be checked - again refer to a technician if you don't have the experience. If the fuse doesn't blow you have isolated the tube as the problem. Replace the power tubes, have the amp rebiased and you should be back in business.

Cheers Stephan

Ya gonna love this stephan!
when the amp fell over in the car last week the front grill panel had come away. so the other night i redrilled and fixed it in place. to get to one of the screws i had to remove the rectifier valve, when i put it back i some how managed to squeeze it into the valve socket the wrong way. (maybe that socket needs replacing)
iive just put the valve back in THE RIGHT WAY and hooray, it works and it dosen't blow fuses anymore.
i haven't plugged my guitar into it yet but its looking good!
