Would love some LP humbucker recommendations
« on: April 05, 2012, 07:27:58 PM »
Hey everyone, first timer here!

So I'm looking to order a set of buckers for my Les Paul within the next few days but I'm having a little trouble deciding.  It's got a BB Pro in the bridge that I like the tone of and I have a 57 Classic I can/t stand.  Too muddy and flabby, no definition.

I play mostly alt rock/pop with some heavier stuff occasionally, fair mix of clean and dirt.  I like fat, bright cleans and well defined gain with a good amount of balls.  Think Light Grenades-era Incubus meets Jackson Square-era Arkells.  That's where I'd like to be at.  I do solo from time to time and want the saturation there if I want to reach for it with a boost.

I was looking at The Mule, The VHII's and Riff Raffs.  I'm leaning towards the Riff Raffs, but I'd love to hear any thoughts.

Thanks in advance!
Mike

More research has led me to the Abraxas set.  Sounds ideal for my needs.

They're all badass, but different. Riffraffs will cut and are pretty tight, the middier Abraxas connects the vintagehot PAF-flavour with modern tones like Satriani. I have Mules in a mahogany bolt-on Saint Blues and they're great too in the classic PAF-way. Balanced, but with a delightful crispiness. I like the VHII (in my strat) for heavier rock stuff. The leadtones are wicked. Very touchsensitive too.
From your description RR's would bring you there when you're using a boost.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I would go with the RR or RY for more output.
Both would do exactly what you want.
Actually, the RY may be better, more versatile.
