I can remember when this forum was about guitars and pickups
« on: April 08, 2012, 04:44:16 PM »
Is it me or has this place entered the phase where it seem to be more arguing about shite than pickups, guitars and amps?

I have to admit I'm finding it harder and harder to actually give a toss about what's said in the forums as it usually just degenerates into a 'I'm right, you're wrong', tit for tat bitching fest. Arguing online is like pissing into the wind with your mouth open.

I've also noticed that some of the accounts in various recent threads are now 'guest' accounts. IE people have actually gone and deleted their accounts. So I'm obviously not alone if getting tired of it.

It's a pickup forum FFS. There's a reason a lot of the major forums don't tolerate politics, religious and other topics which can rapidly develop into arguments.

This is a hard post to answer without being guilty of exactly what you're complaining about... ;)

What I will say is from a matter of perspective, this forum has one of the best signal to noise ratios out there when it comes to OT/banter vs pups/gear. A little OT ain't bad and I don't think this one has yet got to anywhere near the proportions where we need to become concerned about it.

Finally, when it comes to internet forums (all of them as this inevitably crops up on them all) I always like to leave with: It's just an internet forum, is it really worth getting worked up about it?

Well I'm guilty of this as I've started a couple threads like this.

I think sometimes it's necessary to talk about random things to keep the forum alive. If it was all about pickups, then by now, every single pickup question would have been asked & answered and there'd be no reason to sign up or communiacate, as you could just search for what you was looking for and read what other people have recommended to other people, that fit your criteria.

Something I've noticed on this forum though, is that even with discussion where people have major disagreements, it's very formal and kept relativitly friendly. I've seen on other forums where people start insulting each other, just because they use a certain pickup. It could be a Seymour Duncan forum and somebody will say they use Blackouts, and just because they're active, you'll get some guy calling them not very friendly things, saying they no nothing about pickups, and this pickup is the best, and if you'd rather pick Blackouts over something like a Distortion, then they must be a total "insert bad language here". Then the thread becomes a mile long of people acting like they're in the film 300 or summat.

It's a nice place to discuss things on here. I guess that's why there's an "Off-Topic" section :)

Well, we have "Time Out" and "The Dressing Room" for off-topic discussions.  They've been there the whole time I've used the forum.

So what's wrong with that?  :?

I actually find this one of the better OT forums because people here are pretty polite and well reasoned. Even the people who disagree with you are informative.
I think a big part is that politics and economics have become more immediate recently and as a consequence many of us aren't buying exotic new gear lately, so there's less guitar chat.

This is totally valid. There's a track forum that used to have a lot of OT on there. Soon as that was stopped the forum died. Lucky if there's a couple of posts a week there at the moment... if that.

This thread again? The forum would be dead without off topic chat. You are not compelled to read any thread you don't want to. There is nowhere near the volume of political or especially not religious threads as the opening post would lead one to suspect.

A grip needs gotten.

I don't always say it, but I seem to be agreeing with you more and more on some of these recent discussions.

I'm with you, Shobet.  We used to have a real mix/balance of music styles/gear/off-topic conversations/banter but that diversity seems to have been lost of late and some hostility has crept in.

It was a surprise to me when I realised a mutual friend had deleted his account recently, but after speaking to him I totally understand why he did.

+2. If its been here as long as Philly, it surely must have a place. I always preferred freedom and in the proper room suites the forum nicely...best forum on the planet really, carry on mates. :)
