another to add to the list is

Both Worlds - Memory Rendered Visible.......apperences by Keith Caputo and Chaka Malik

Life of agony is one of my favorite bands......keith caputo is one of my favorite singers.

I was going to mention Both Worlds. Wasn't AJ Novello in Both Worlds too? He's a guitar hero of mine. I don't think I like ALL of the Both Worlds stuff though. It's cool though. Mike Dijan is also a beast. Breakdown, Crown Of Thornz, Cold Front... I'm also gonna drop Inside Out. AWESOME band. Shag, did you ever have a rat tail and go to Shelter shows?

I'm more impressed that I don't recognise a single band on that list... Someone else did this to me at work recently with their pod. I think that's when I realised that I'd become old.

I don't think you need to worry about not knowing these bands. That said, sometimes I feel like people should perhaps be aware of a couple depending on their musical taste. Within Hardcore Punk its impossible to say how influential some of those band have been. For example Cro-Mags, massively influential. As are Agnostic Front, Integrity, Bulldoze, Judge, Earth x Crisis, strife etc... I'd be willing to say some of these bands as responsible for some of the sub genres of heavy music even existing today like metalcore or djent... whatever.

Very few of those bands are really current though right? Some that still exist have been around a long time too. I guess this reflects the H20 lyrics you posted though. My friends band was going to be tour support for H20 in europe once, because one of em sort of knew Toby Morse. But they couldn't because another band paid to be on the tour. That was wacky. especially for a tour like that.

I love a lot of bands on that list. Blood for Blood.classic. Did you ever notice that the quote under my posts is from Vendetta by Irate?

I recognised 21 of the band names on that list - not saying I've actually heard all of those 21, but most.

I'm assuming the ones I know are the ones who've been around longest.

I'm starting to feel rejuvenated!

I only recognised a few... and then I realised that's only because they'd already been mentioned in this thread...

I have learnt something though - a lot of modern metal or heavy stuff has always sounded, to me anyway, more like what I'd think of as punk... (but I've kept me trap shut all these years in case I'm being daft)

From what Dmoney's said, though, it turns out that this impression could be far from daft :D

And thinking about it, I remember seeing Fast Eddie's last tour with Motorhead (Iron Fist, 1980/81?), and half the audience were punks - kind of threw me at first. But Motorhead were probably more "punk" than most of the bands that were getting punk hits in the charts around then!

Strange... I've never been that into punk, definitely not into modern metal/heavy... but this little thread de-railment has opened up a connection that could possibly get me the ears to appreciate both. But... can I get the energy to take the blues-rock and easy-listening CDs out of the multi-changer though?

one band that is fairly new that I like is Cancerslug. they are a horror punk band but not laughable like most.

tales of a butcher is good to start with as it is their best quality recording.

well, one band mention (Rollins Band) have a huge blues influence. There is also a big vein of blues running through a bunch of Poison Idea stuff, who are were/are very much punk.

Funny you should mentioned motorhead. There is an interview I've seen with Lemmy where he talks about bands not being "real" or legit or something, and he says one band Motorhead toured with that were really on point was Cro-Mags. There are photos of Harley from Cro-Mags chilling with Joe Strummer in the back of CBGB's when Harley is like, 12 years old or something. (least I think I've seen that!)

I'd love to see Bad Brains, but I wouldn't pay that. It's not like it was back in the day but still. I love most of their records including Build A Nation and God Of Love. They have HUGE riffs even if the vocals styles sort of... changed!

If you want something current to check out, you probably know em anyway, but listen to Wisdom In Chains,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSbgxQQjq-Y - latest video I think
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKrmw8Kb1I0 - a song about discovering hardcore by seeing Sick Of It All.

big oi! influence as well as metal and hardcore etc... Richie and Joe are two of the nicest guys I've met in recent years.

I've not heard of that band before but I like it, just checked it out!

I think my fave NJ band would be a toss up between Fury Of Five and E Town.
I like Floorpunch though, and those 'shore style' bands around a number of years ago.

But then, when we start bandying around terms like "punk" it's just as broad as "metal" (and almost as broad as "rock"  )

For me, there's a significant distinction between the hardcore (if that's the right term....!) bands being discussed here and the original UK punk bands or that dreadful modern pop-punk.

If someone says "punk" the first thing I think of is that very fast, constant beat - made for pogoing to!  It's loud, aggressive music, but it doesn't really have any power - in fact it's pretty lightweight.   Whereas the hardcore stuff has bigger riffs and much stronger rhythms/grooves - so to me it's more like metal in that respect, which is why I like it.

Plus (apropos of nothing) some of these guys - certainly Helmet and the Rollins Band, for example - are seriously good musicians.
