Mesa Single for JSX-good swap?
« on: April 25, 2012, 03:10:48 PM »
Im thinking of maybe swapping my mesa single rectifier for a Peavey JSX- i know tone/amps are very subjective, but just wanted to get some opinions on this. What do you guys reckon? good idea? Thanks

I think the JSX is the better amp actually, at least to my ears and taste. Of course it doesn't sound like a Rectifier.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

depends on what you're playing
I had the single and dual rectifiers and hated them
I also had a peavey rockmaster preamp, which was the circuit base for the JSX and liked it much better for some metal stuff
it was much more in your face sounding, with very tight bass response, cutting upper mids and had a dense wall of midrange (tighter, middier and more dense sounding than a peavey 5150)

the drive is not much versatile, though, despite of the active controls being much more responsive
no 3D sounding distorted chords here, only full power chord brick to the head  8)
it's more articulate than the rectifier on single notes, though

but I think rectifiers are less dominating over the rest of your rig
the peavey ultra series (xxx, jsx, rockmaster, 3120...) have that "emg" feel that makes everything sound similar even when you change pickups, guitars, speakers... which can be great if you want to get the same tone most of the time (in a tour or rehearsing at different studios with different cabinets)

if you're in the US it might be worth the experience, but mesas are much more expensive anywhere else

but if you're playing thrash metal or some kind of metalcore, the jsx is one of the best amps you can get

And you didnt find the preamp overly noisy? i only ask as whats stopping me going for the Jsx is the amount of noise and hiss it produces.

depended on gain and booster levels
in mid gain settings it was fine
I used a noise gate between a wylde overdrive and the preamp
still noisier than a recto for sure

I wouldn't touch a modern Boogie for a number of reasons... mainly serviceability issues... they are a pig to work on for a start and Randall Smith is notorious for underspecifying his output transformers - claiming they sound better... pure tosh...

I have had - however - a Boogie SOB that was pretty good... swapped it for a load of rack stuff years ago... so I'm not just knocking all of their stuff... have also worked on other early stuff and it wasn't too bad but the new stuff is a nightmare...

hey guys thanks for the info.
Im torn to be honest-what i like about my rectifier:
-Clarity
-Responsiveness to pickups,guitars-flexibility
-Deadly quiet and build quality
Dont like:
-Lack of punch
-Lack of sustain and 'liquid' feel for lead work

I recently tried the Jsx again and managed to sort out all the feedback/noise/hiss issues by simply putting my Maxon through the Boss NS2 loop-i couldn't believe it! even the ultra channel was quiet. Im just worried that the tone the JSX will give me will lose clarity and that 'transparent' quality the mesa seems to have.

yeah, you won't get that kind of transparency from peavey or ENGL
their gain structure is all about saturation filling everything, and that's what make them so brutal and in-your-face sounding
I like them for more aggressive metal, but they don't let the guitars "breathe"

maybe you want something like a Framus Cobra instead
it has the recto clarity and transparency qualities, but the tightness of a JSX with a lot more low end punch (the preamp section has an external depth control, but the power section has a built-in maxed depth circuit) and a full spectre midrange, unlike the recto
easily the punchiest amp I ever had or played
it's dry and brutal, but has the open feel in the mids, like a soldano
preamp gain circuit is pretty much the same of the recto and soldano, but with a different type of tonestack that makes it more hard sounding and articulated
it's pretty quiet and responds to pickup/picking dynamics better than the recto
it also has a flawless fender bassman clean channel

Good call for the Framus Cobra. Maybe have a look at the Koch Powertone too.
