Same old question, with a twist...
« on: February 08, 2006, 05:00:40 PM »
Hi!
I'm looking at bareknuckles, and I wonder if you could recommend me a combination of HB/SC. Which is the twist really...

I decided to bring my old Peavey Vandenberg to life by exchanging the stock pups with something new. Its the combination of HB/SC I'm pretty unsure of, hope you can provide me with advice so I can decide.

Guitar specs:
Alder Body
Maple Neck, Ebony Fretboard, 24 frets, bolt on
Kahnler tremolo
pickups currently on: 1 Alnico humbucker(bridge), 1 singlecoil(neck)

The sound I want:
I play mainly metal.
I'm thinking a high output bridge-humbucker where you can rip those palm-muting riffs and HEAVY power chords.Chugga-chugga style.  Tight distorted riffs are the keywords here!
For the singlecoil in the neck I'd like something that would sound good for solos. I like solos that really sings, with lots of sustain when you use plenty of distortion with some delay. But, and this is important, I need the singlecoil to be able to sound nice clean. Occasionally I play very clean stuff, almost jazzy like...

I think I'm after MM, warpig or nailbomb for the bridge. I don't want my guitar to sound shrill, but muddy bass is nothing for me either. Alder bodies are pretty trebley from the beginning, right? It doesn't matter if the humbucker is great for solos too. Also, I intend to wire it so It's splittable...

I understand it can be hard to match these criterfias, but hey, if some people should know, it's probably you guys...?.

I think a Miracle Man/Trilogy Suite combo will be perfect for what you're doing. The alder will calm the pups down a bit, but you will still have tons of clarity and attack. Both of those pups practically play themselves.

Thanks TwilightOdyssey!
So you think I'll have decent cleans too with this combination?

Well, you tell me!
Will the Nailbomb provide the tightness I need? And it won't be too shrill for the alder body?

^from what i hear, the nailbomb is less trebly than the miracle man.

Haven't tried it, though.

Hey Dave! Nice to see you here too :D

Anyway, I dropped a mail to Bareknuckle, they've got these H-S-S sets which are supposed to match quite good.
Let's see what they've got to say, they might make me a set of my own a H-S set especially for me...?

I just got a mail from Tim here at BK.
He also recommends MiracleMan with the Trilogy. (alternatively Irish Tour for a more vintage sound)...

I'm tempted to order right away, but I'm gonna do myself a favor and think about it a day or two...
I must confess it seems the dimarzio/duncan combos I had in mind are losing the race...

^yeah, definitely think about it.

An extra day or two is nothing if it means getting the right pickups!

A question regarding the singlecoil I'm about to purchase:

All BK singlecoils are F-spaced (52mm). My Vandenberg neck is not very wide. The singlecoil on it now has a 50mm space, still, both my e-strings are not aligned above the outer poles.
Instead they are aligned at the very inside edge of each pole. With the wider BK singlecoil they will be aligned even further inside of those poles... Will that have an affect on my tone?

I guess it's better they are aligned inside the outer poles than outside of them, but still...
Anyone with some knowledge of these things kind enough to reply?

EDIT: Got an answer from Tim, there should be no problems with loss of tone...

I've got a Trilogy Suite in the neck of my Strat copy. It's wound hotter than the normal ones but it still sounds beautiful clean. I've also got a Nailbomb in the bridge and it can do everything.

Excellent, looking forward to hearing what you think of them as I'm planning on the exact same for my old Charvel.  :)
