Wich bk pickup for my homemade sg?
« on: April 30, 2012, 11:17:09 PM »
Hi,
I'm looking for a right set (mix o not) of humbucker pickup for my homemade sg style guitar..
Body:walnut, neck:moghany and fingerboard:ebony...
I play acdc, deep purple and led zeppelin's hard rock-blues, with a little bit of first 80 metal.. (vintage page/angus sound with a little bit of van halen)..
For the neck position: warm and round tone, good attack and just a bit of aggresivity, with possible little distortion to do (classic rock/blues).
For the bridge: warm and round tone again, plus mid, good attack, more output and aggresivity than neck position (not very big difference) with possibile great distortion to do...

Wich bk??
Thank you and excuse me for my english!

Ok, rhank you for the quick answers, but the difference of output between bridge and neck is enough?... And my walnut (swiss national walnut) is brighter than the standard american walnut, and i want it in direction to vintagelow-warm tone, the combination are also ok (bass level)??

Mule neck - vh2 bridge or riffraff neck - vh2 bridge, for more output, or like you say mule neck - riffraff bridge... Vh2 is medium output?

Yeah, but don't necessarily look at output to determine how heavy it can get. Some metal players pick pups like RR, VH, BD over NB or CS. I still think you best bet is a RR set though. I could be mistaken, but I feel like mules are really at their best in LPs, not SGs.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Can you give me some technical reasons, because you prefer the mule on LP and riffraff on sg? is for the thickness of the body?? I'm interested for choosing good.. thsnk's

I mean, I'm basing this on personal opinions, but the Mules are BK's take on PAFs, which are known for LP's. And Riff Raff...I mean, I know the names of these pickups aren't based solely on the artists song they're named after, but stil, unless you want to play like extreme black metal on an SG, you usually get RR. Im not too schooled on the exact specs and descriptions of the pups, so someone else should chime in.

riff raffs are PAF based too, but on 60's PAFs
and guess what? they weren't making les pauls in the 60's, only SGs until 1968
despite of having a shorter magnet, the alnico 5 puts out a punchier attack than the long 'vintage cut' alnico 4 magnet in the mule
les pauls push a lot more sound 'into' pickups than SGs, so the mules benefit more from a bigger body and the maple top

but the vhII should work pretty well, though
by specs, it's pretty much an overwound alnico 5 mule, so it's hotter and less smooth sounding with the extra edge from alnico 5

ok, i didn't know that..it's another sound reference.. but i don't understand, vh2 can be ok for bridge on sg??
I refer to angus tone, becouse is the only hard rock guitarist, that i wrote int he first post, who play an sg. I'm looking for the sound like in the songs: big gun, shoot of thrill, war machine and stiff upper lip. but is important that my body wood sound brighter than the moghany guitar body of angus (so i need a little bit more bass tone i think)... That is now my right rieferences...
