pickups set - need help
« on: May 05, 2012, 08:23:03 AM »
Hi!
I'm looking for pickups set.
Like sound of alkaline trio, living end, anti-flag, sum 41, blink 182, rancid, nofx.
Also a bit of gary moore, pink floyd, beatles, megadeth.
So looking pickups with good clean and overdriven/distorted sounds.

In other forums i was advised to look at sh4+sh2, ToneZone+AirNorton, 498T+490R, SD Mustaine Set.
But also a lot of positive feedback for Bare Knuckle.
Which Bare Knuckle pickups can be compared to listed above and can suit music that I play?
Maybe rebel yell set?

UPD: my guitar - lp-style Godin Core HB (mahagony+maple body and mahagony+rosewood set neck) with stock pups (tried SD Blackouts AHB-1 - too dark, too high output, poor clean)

Hmm, quite a range of tones you're looking for there.  What amps and pedals are you using?

I have Ibanez TS9, Engl E530 preamp and Custom-made tube combo (10w, 2x12AX7 preamp, 2xEL84 poweramp).
I plan to inculde Pod hd500 in my rig with 4-cable method in future (when I buy it :) )

Out of the pickups suggested on the other forums the only decent ones are the DiMarzios but BKP can easily do better.

You play a very wide range of styles and the Blackhawk seems like it would would work excellently.
Another set that would work very nicely is the Holy Diver Bridge/Emerald Neck.

The Holy Diver will be able to do any of the tones mention, has great cleans and sounds amazing coil tapped. It is also very thick and aggressive if needed.
The Emerald has absolutely stunning cleans and has amazing, smooth lead tones. It is very responsive and I find that is does amazing gary moore and beatles tones and should be decent for pink floyd tones but gilmour uses a strat so it wont sounds exact.
If you're willing to cut back on versatility a bit... Gary Moore actually used the PG Blues by BKP. They'll get you very close to his tone but they wont really be very versatile and they are a bit too low output for the higher gain bands.

The Emerald and Holy Diver used together in the middle position give a killer rythm tone too and the sound very "tele-esque" and twangy when coil tapped together.

The pickups that you listed will be ok for those genres except for the SD Dave Mustaine set which is practically only for metal but none of the pickups that you listed will sound anywhere near as good as BKPs.
The SDs sound dull and hard with an unbalanced EQ ans way too scooped mids, the DiMarzios sound decent but not much better than that and the 490R and 498T is the most muddy and dark pickups set that I've ever played.

The pickups that I listed will be great for you needs and will sound much better than what you listed.

I recommend emailing BKP directly and seeing what they recommend to you.

Since you're using a tubescreamer and given the fact you want to stretch from Beatles to Megadeth I would look at something vintage/hot like RiffRaffs and (compared to the RR's middier) Blackdogs. When boosted they are tight enough for metal, but they also have stellar open and dynamic cleans. I can do serious metaltones with the Mules in my Saint Blues if necessary. You just need a boost to get there. Anyway I like low- to mediumoutput pickups better with much preampgain.
If you want a more agressive pickup with more output and punchy mids (RR's is punchy too) maybe Rebel Yells. They're are quite cutting, but you will be heard in the mix.

IMO, Rebel Yell's are probably one of, if not the most, versatile pickups BKP has to offer. Some of my tones to chase when I purchased my pickups were ones you listed, and I ended up with the RY. Also, it's very hard to do better than an RY in a Les Paul!

Ah, yes. I forgot about the Rebell Yells. Also great pickups.

Much as I love the Holydiver bridge, there's an awful lot of mahogany there so I think the Rebel Yells would be a good fit. Another option I'd look at is a set of Cold Sweats. I've used these before in a previous guitar and they're fantastic pickups that will cut through all that dark wood and are significantly more versatile than the name might suggest.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

So, I was quite close. Choiche now is a matter of priority. Do you play more the classic stuff or the metal side of the repertoire? In the first case I would pick the RiffRaff, otherwise the RY.

Well I wouldn't exactly say RY is a "metal" pickup.

^ Well, he didn't say that Rebel Yell was a metal pickup.  Just if you want more of a metal sound, and you are choosing from the Riff Raff or RY, the RY would be able to handle doing metal better than the Riff Raff.  The Rebel Yell can do metal very easy, and it can handle allot of gain, and lower tunings, while staying tight in the bass response.
