Philly(Q) I know you will be extrememly exited that your namesake PhilX is coming to the UK next month   .

Andertons have arranged for him to do some demos and he is probably going to arrange some gigs with the Drills. Get your ticket Philly .... there might be a chance to pick up some cheap black nail varnish at the gigs  PDT_005

In a spirit of goodwill, I have been trying hard recently to feel better disposed towards Mr Philip Xenidis.

Whilst it's true that I find his natural ebullience.... how shall I put it.... trying, I do appreciate his musical skills, although his singing style is not, perhaps, in line with my personal taste.

As to the question of travelling to one of his demonstration clinics, possibly even paying to witness a performance by his no doubt estimable band "The Drills".....

This:

He is a most tiresome individual.

Not arguing about his talent - although as I say, I don't like his voice - he's just the type of person I find really annoying.  He's too in-your-face.   I hate all that shouting and hooting and cackling and the way he keeps mumbling near-meaningless cr@p like he can't bear a moment's silence.

I bet he gets on a bus with a friend then sits on the other side of the aisle, several rows away, and proceeds to SHOUT a conversation at them.
I bet he shouts into his mobile phone, no matter where he is - and has the loudest, most annoying ringtone in the world.
I bet he talks in the cinema.
I bet he always has to be the centre of attention at parties.
I bet he'd make some comedy noise during the minute's silence on Remembrance Day.

Look, I'm sorry.  I'm sure he's not a bad person, he's probably basically a nice guy.  I just wish he wasn't so hyper and manic all the $%&#ing time.

I somehow thought you would not be going to see him.

I think of him as the Ali G/Borat of guitarists .... he appears as such a complete, over the top, t**t that I like him. I do enjoy his Fretted Americana demos - he really thrashes the guitars whether they are 1959 Les Pauls or a cheap Hofner so you get an idea how the guitar really performs.

(David Carlton: Tell me, Ali, do you have a job?
Ali G: Unfortunately, I iz recently gone on the dole...
David Carlton: Really? When?
Ali G: Eight years and three months ago.
David Carlton: Says here you claim disability benefit, are you...?
Ali G: Yes, I iz actually spasticated. I iz got a terrible DJ'ing injury - I still ain't got full mobility in me main mixing finger...
[starts to air-mix, winces, feigns pain, and stops. Notices Carlton's fit secretary looking at him, so he points to his crotch]
Ali G: Everything down there's still working, though! Oh, yes...)

Yeah, see....  :| ... I have trouble with Sacha Baron Cohen and his characters too.  He's very clever, and funny.... but I think he takes it too far and I end up feeling sorry for his "victims".  He's controlling the situation, without their knowledge, so he has an unfair advantage.... it's impossible for them not to end up looking like fools.  OK, they're on camera and you could argue they're hanging themselves, all he's doing is giving them the rope, but sometimes it's too much.

I actually watched Borat at the weekend.  There's the bit at the rodeo where the old guy's insulting Muslims - I guess he deserves the "give 'em enough rope" treatment (and I liked the bit where Borat sings the national anthem).  But then later Borat goes to that dinner party and starts showing them pictures of his teenage "son" naked.... why???  :?   I had to turn off at that point.

Way off topic.

Well, these guys definitely hung themselves (and fully deserved it IMO!):

Agree on the dinner party stuff though - quite why he needed to do some of it is beyond me. I know his job is to make films and make people laugh but some of that was a bit 'off'. PErhaps I'm getting too old!
I think I hate being indecisive.

Wow.  :|

I would rather have Phil X stay at my house for a week than put up with those assholes for 5 minutes.

How did we go from Phil X to Borat? I think Phil X's enthusiasm is funny and engaging for the first couple videos, but then I think it probably gets annoying really quickly after that. I wouldn't know, I haven't subjected myself to his antics enough to know.

Sacha Baron Cohen on the other hand is great. He doesn't unfairly manipulate people, and there are probably plenty of scenes they never released because the person he talked to wasn't a total bigot or idiot or whatever and were able to handle the situation like mature, capable adults. People's true characters are revealed when they are put in highly stressful or unusual situations, that's why his characters are so over the top. Although I do agree that sometimes his antics seem pointless or just shocking for the sake of being shocking
