Simple questions
« on: May 19, 2012, 08:21:35 AM »
After lots of trouble with my car etc. I think I am finally in a position to order the pickups for my PRS  :D

It's going to be a Holydiver bridge and Emerald neck and my first question is about if I should get open poled or covered. My amp is quite bright but using an EQ can probably sort that out. I do like the look of the Zebras as I think they'd look really good on this guitar but I think chrome covers with chrome pickup rings would also look great. I'll try to add a picture at the end of this post. What do you think?

Secondly, am I correct in thinking that because this isn't a locking trem, I need the 50mm spacing rather than 53mm?

Finally, am I after short or long leg?

I don't think having no covers actually adds any brightness. I think that it make the sound slightly more biting and aggressive but it shouldn't really change the "EQ" of the pickup.

I actually think that covers would look really cool on that but I've always prefered the slightly more pushy and aggressive sound of open coil pickups. It's all up to you. I think that Eric has a Greco LP copy and he has an uncovered cream neck and chrome covered bridge that looks really awesome. At the end of the day it's all your choice though :)

I think that all trems are 53mm but you're best of just measuring with a ruler :)

For a PRS you'll want short leg pickups if I remember correctly. It's a basic rule of thumb to always choose choose short leg pickups though cos as long as you have a pickup ring it'll fit properly in any guitar whilst long legs won't necessarily fit every guitar even if it has mounting rings.

Couldn't have said it better myself! I do find though that the open coils tend to feedback a little more, so I'd keep that in consideration too.

Hey,
I´m wondering about the same things concerning my PRS Tremonti (which has a tremolo, too).

I need a 51mm spacing (have just measured it) so I have to choose between the "classic" 49mm and 53mm
(I guess that it won´t affect the sound anyway)

Think you will need the short leg plate because your PRS hasn´t got this thick, "Les Paulish" body (mine has, so I´m gonna take the long leg).
If you wanna make sure that it really fits, you have to detune the strings and dismount the screws of the humbucker-ring and take a look at your stock pickups.

My "plan" was to take a cover (only optical reasons !)  for the bridge Pu (leaving the neck position without a cover)

But now I´m afraid that the cover will not fit into the ring of my PRS (have just measured it and it lacks of 3mm space....the ring is too narrow at the inner side).

Go for the 51mm spacing.
What model PRS do you have? I'd actually take the Short Legs of yo have mounting rings.
There are many people on this forum with covered BKPs in their PRS guitars... It should fit.
I'd just email Tim if you have any worries about specs.

Yep, string 1 to string 6 measures 51mm so I'm stuck right between the two options available. I've emailed BKP for clarification so I'll post the response as soon as I get it.

Yeah,
please let us know Tim´s opinion about the spacing ( guess we have to compromise because "our" spacings are somewhere in between....)

I´ve got a PRS Tremonti (which is a singlecut with a 45mm thick body).
(just have dismounted the stock-pickups for measurement and they are "long-legged").

So i think it woun´t be wrong to take the "long-legged" again, will it ?
( on the other hand the short legged perhaps will be a little easier to handle when being mounted ....)

OK, got the reply:

Hi Andy

short leg and standard spacing(50mm) should do the job nicely.

Kindest Regards,

Tim

Edit:
I wanted to express that the short legged ones will be easier to handle when I put it into the guitar....

Now (after a quick  look into the dictionary) I found out that the phrase "to be mounted" has to do with horses....

So feel free to laugh at an  ignorant German....

If that's the case then anything will work :)
