Problem with BKP Emeralds cleaning up
« on: May 24, 2012, 09:52:37 AM »
I got my BKP Emeralds in my Les Paul not too long ago, and whilst I love them, I'm having problems when backing off the volume on both the the neck and bridge pickup. If anyone has seen the G3 DVD with John Petrucci, I'm going after the effect he produces when backing of the volume half way through Glasgow Kiss to achieve that nice peaceful solo sound.

The problem is that the pickup just sounds like it's losing power and a can't seem to get any feeling out of it. It was like backing off an EMG 81, where you feel it is still pushing the amp. I really wanted something touch sensitive for doing stuff like this. Anyone have this problem, or anyone have a solution?

I'm using 4 CTS 550k pots, the higher value Cap. on the bridge and the lower value cap. on the neck.

Can't tell about Emeralds - never played them - but how your tone cleans up with the volume pot depends not only on the pup (and electronics), but also on the amp, gain pedals (if any), and how you setup your gain(s). My own experience is that I get way better results on a crunchy vintage amp pushed by a low-gain OD setup for dirt boost than on a more modern hi-gain amp set up for approximately the same amount of distortion (without any pedal) - and this with any of my 'buckers (RR, ABomb/Mule, Crawlers).

Not that I don't have some cleanup on the hi-gain part of my amp nor that all pups clean up the same (RR and ABomb bridge, which are rather bright and not much "compressed", tend to clean more than the Crawler), but the main difference wrt/ cleaning up with the volume pot obviously comes from the gain structure - FWIW, on some hi-gain amps I tried, I just couldn't get anything but mush when rolling down the guitar volume.

So the question is: did you try with 1/same amp, same settings, different pups and b/same pups, different amp ? And if yes, do you still have the same problem ?

Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

I know the problem with my EMGs, but not with my BKP. Does it clear up better with other pickups/guitars?

I have an Emerald Neck and it cleans up extremely nicely. You might want to back off the preamp gain and crank the volume a bit for a better clean up. At a certain level, no matter how good your amp is, Preamp gain just destroys and responsiveness. It all becomes the same whether it be attack or output or whatnot.

Well I've played through multiple amps from Plexis to Rectifiers to 6505s. My other guitars seem to work, just not this one which is confusing. I mean the others back off very well, but still not perfect. But they seem to be better than the Emeralds, which seems strange.

maybe they're too close to the strings?
or maybe your guitar is too aggressive sounding (well, it happens)

Yeah I think I'd mess with the height a little bit. See if that helps much.

Yh, I've tried that too. I don't play too close to the strings anyways.

Regarding the guitar being aggressive, how would that add to the pickup sounding weak? Is there any chance I may just have a faulty pot?

It could be the pot, or the resistor.

Do you have a cap or cap/resistor combination on the volume pots of this particular guitar? While they help in retaining highs when turning down the volume they lessen the volume reduction per rotation somewhat.

Cheers Stephan

I have the Jensen ones. The .022 for the bridge and the .015 for the neck.
