Are The Black Dogs One Dimentional?
« on: May 26, 2012, 01:12:16 PM »
I was seriously considering a pair of Black Dogs for my Jap Tokai Les Paul Standard, but now i am having second thoughts. They seem to a bit dark compared to the others. Now my mind is wandering towards Rebel Yells, Emeralds, Riff Raffs or even the Abraxas. I already have a pair of Mules in a Bacchus Les Paul, a set of VHII's in a PRS and a set of Holy Divers in an Ibanez.

I am mostly into classic rock and maybe some 80's rock too.

This new vid from BKP has me thinking though, this set is slowly growing on me.

they dog is darker than most of the other models, but not one dimensional

I've had it in my 1973 gibson les paul custom, and it sounded pretty close to the holy diver, but a bit darker, softer and lower output...  more open due to the lower output, of course, but with a similar center midrange density
it didn't sound as open and clear as the riff raff does in the same guitar, but still retained lots of clarity
the riff raff has quite flat mids and lot of top end, while the dog has a tamed top and it is very midrangy

right now I have it paired with a neck cold sweat in a 1978 greco eg900 les paul standard (brazilian rosewood/maple neck)
it sounds pretty good in this particular guitar, stronger, lot middier and more dense sounding than the riff raff in the les paul custom, but not as 3D
the riff has a spankier and punchier attack on lows and highs (probably cause my raff has a custom thicker magnet), but the dog feels gainier

if you enjoy the holy diver but want classic tones, you'll love it
not a true Zeppelin sounding pickup, in my opinion (I'd still pick the mule or riff raff for that), but reminds of 90's bands with vintage vibe tones, like Soundgarden and lots of stoner bands

no experience with the neck dog, diver or raff, though

ps: that tone in the video is amazing  :o

Thanks for the detailed view on the Black Dog. I am still waiting for the Holy Diver to get soldered into my Ibanez, so maybe i will wait to see how it sounds.

But yes, that vid above is pretty amazing alright, might swing me on the decision. The Riff Raff neck is not to much more bassy than the Black Dog bridge. Sounds the business.

I got a black dog neck in my lp clone and I like it a lot. Unfortunately I can't compare it to any of the other BKP neck humbuckers as I haven't played any.
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)

killer website section!

that guy should be in this forum  :D

That was interesting!

I didn't know Little Angels were reforming.  I have good memories of seeing them live in their very early days (when Bruce had his original Kramer Pacer).  I didn't like them so much after they got a record deal, to be honest.... but good band.

And agreed, that BD/RR clip sounds great!  :D
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I certainly can't get that type of tone out of the black dog with my guitar and amps (perhaps with the riff raff)
guess that's the 1 pot circuit and a vox ac30?

That's a cool vid, thanks for bringing it up. I'd say it matters exactly what kind of rock you're playing, and is your guitar naturally dark or bright?

I was hoping to throw a set of Bare Knuckles into my Jap Tokai LP. I went off the idea of Black Dogs into it. Now that new vid is temptingme for that very set. Now Eric, with his last comment, has put me off them again.  :?
