yet another pickup help
« on: May 29, 2012, 09:46:36 AM »
hey guys

I just wanted to ask you on your advice on a possible pickup hunt.. I've got a custom made 7string guitar with following specs:

- mahogany body/wenge top
- 1 piece hard maple neck with indian rosewood FB bolt-on
- B standard

at this moment I've got a BKP emerald in my bridge position and I've been thinking about trying something new, its got an OK sound but the higher positions on the neck are still quite 'ringing and a little piercing, you know

amp - boogie mark 5/traditional cab

I've been considering a DM Dsonic7, BKP Black dog, Crawler or abraxas perhaps,  but I have no experience with these at all.

I'm looking for a medium output/full sounding (but not too bassy), growly sound but still with enough detail.. i'd like to avoid getting a shrill/thin/trebbly sound or too much bass as the amp is quite picky on woods/pickups and stuff like that..

Out of your selection I own the Crawler and the Abraxas and find the Abraxas to be more open and detailed than the Crawler. I would also look at the Holydiver.

Cheers Stephan

I think you'd like the HD for this, but the BD should be good too.

+1 for the Holy Diver. Even though it's in the contemporary section it's more of a vintage hit pickups with a modern edge.
The black dog would also work nicely but it's a bit flabbier in the bass and slightly darker. The abraxas would work too but overall the Holy Diver seems like the best choice.

I would suggest the Holy Diver, which I think would be very good for what you need.

hey guys, thanks for all the help! I'll definitely look into HD.. At first, I thought that there is a general idea that HD suits more to alder/ash superstrats with floyds to pump up the bottom end...

Yep. Thats a common misconception. Its really not dark at all. It just has a powerful midrange. THe only guitar I can think of that it wouldn't work well in is an SG because SGs are already pumped with mid range.
I would recommend BKPs 550k pots to go with it though.
