Hi,

ive recently bought a original JCM800 2x12" 50watt 4212 combo (2 channels)

just gotta say i love the amp it amazing! channel 1 is dialed in as my clean channel and channel 2 is my distortion channel.

but for lead work (which is a must in my band) i need a overdrive pedal does anyone have review on their own pedals or pedals they have used?

last night i borrowed a ZW44 overdrive for a gig, sounded good but wasnt what i was exspecting with something with the big scary man's name on :)

i need a more controlled sound something of a sonic cross between joe satriani meets metallica meets BLS. a nice high gain like tim has in the nailbomb demo, i know he uses the Keeley SD1 but i was wondering what stock SD1 are like too. if it come to the crunch il fork out for the Keeley SD1.

Also i have a vox wah (modded with numerous bits and bobs including true bypass) when i had the overdrive on and the wah on at the same time i lost some of the sweep and it made strage sounds when i was not playing (is this to do with the output not having a buffer?), but when the overdrive was off the vox sounded lush with the full sweep and no strange noices.

my set-up is:

Jackson Dinkey Custom with Nailbombs>Vox Wah>Zvex Fuzz Factory>JCM800

(when i borrowed the overdrive pedal i put it right behind the fuzz, i never used the fuzz and overdrive at the same time)

The SD pickup boost has a lot of boost to er... boast. And it's fairly transparent. I use a stock SD1 myself to OD the POD even more and I like it so far.

The old faithful Tube Screamer is still very popular.

Not tried one myself though (yet).

the dinkey with nailbombs is great there is not one classic rock or modern metal sound it cant do. it pulls everything off from bob dylan to gun and roses to joe satriani to metallica to BLS.

im looking into a tubescreamer atm to widen the sound.

If you are after a Satriani type sound how about a Boss DS1 used as a boost rather than just as a stand alone distortion - I use one with a Sparkledrive in front of a TSL Marshall and together they cover a lot of ground.

i like the natural sound of valves so im really picky.

it sounds like a good idea, i might take my amp and guitar down the local guitar shop and try out everything they have :D

I'd say a Digitech Bad Monkey. Don't worry it's no digital at all, it's a VERY GOOD copy of a tube screamer (same op amp) with a twist. They added what the TS9 was lacking, a bass control :)
Honestly this 40€ stomp just kills anything 2 or 3 time more expensive, try it :)

How about the Marshall Bluse Breaker 2, it's got a nice clean boost setting too.

It may be a bit tame for what you want but if it's good enough for Gary Moore, plus it's pretty inexpensive too.

I'd go for the Keeley modified SD1 myself. I've got a JCM800 and an Analogman modified SD1 and it totally nails the 80's metal sound. Haven't heard the Keeley version but having Satriani as a user suggests they are the business.

I've got the analogman SD1/808 into a JCM800 and it works nicely enough. I don't exactly get a great amount of gain from it though. I preferred the way it seemed to work into a Plexi model amp...strange, I know. But I think that has as much to do with the amp as it does the pedal. It is a pretty cool pedal, but I much prefer a fuzz for lead sounds. I'm contemplating selling the SD1 at some stage soon - a great pedal just maybe not ideal for me these days.

Tewboss, out of interest, to get that tone, what settings do you have the amp and the pedal at?

I've got all the controls set to the one o'clock position, and into the clean channel of my JCM800 with the gain on full and the same with the volume.

for a bit of fun run the JCM on full gain , bass full, treble and mid around 6/7 presence to taste and set the SD1 to Level 1 oclock, tone 12 oclock and gain 2 oclock. That's how we got the tone on the BKP miracle man demo. :twisted:

Thats...ahem...quite a lot of 'ooomph', even without the SD1. It's still not really the tone I had in my head but it's cool...maybe its just that the JCM800 isn't the amp for me at the end of the day :(

Menatone Red Snapper, Fulltone OCD, Keeley TS808, or Barber DD will do the job very nicely.
