Problem Intonating Wrapover Bridge
« on: June 10, 2012, 12:49:42 AM »
I just installed the Faber compensated wrapover bridge on a Tokai LP special.
I am using the Faber locking posts.
Unfortunately I cannot get it to intonate as all my strings are significantly flat at the twelfth fret and the bridge is as close to the neck as it will go.

Suggestions?

Is it worse than it was with the original bridge?  I believe Tokai normally use the type with a "lightning bar" ridge across the top, rather than the plain vintage-style wraparound?

It's hard to know whether it's the bridge at fault or whether Tokai have simply located the bridge in the "wrong" place.  I've got a Faber bridge somewhere but never actually tried it out.  Given the fact that Tokai and Faber have the same distributors (in Germany, anyway), you'd think they'd work together!

The only thing I can think of is trying TonePros studs instead of the Faber studs - the posts are a bit thinner so they'll give a little more room for adjustment, but perhaps not enough.

Failing that, an adjustable bridge, I guess.  There's quite a good choice out there now - TonePros, PigTail, the Graph Tech ResoMax....

That's a pain
I've not used the Faber bridges although i have had guitars come in that have them on

I have tended to favour the TonePros, the Graphtech Resomax and the Gotoh ones  which I keep in stock.

Philly's answer pretty much covers the issues.
If you need a wraparound that will offer the strings more forward I would avoid the Tonepros one as they work best with the saddles nearer the back to ensure a great break angle over the saddle.

That's an interesting point - I'll file it away in my memory banks!   :)

I had read somewhere that the Resomax gives a better break angle than the TonePros (as well as being lighter and generally more comfortable under the hand).

The TonePro is a great bridge , especially if you are installing it from fresh as the first bridge on a guitar , but worth being aware of the saddle thing.

the Resomax is easier to restring too.

Does the Resomax sit snugly in the mounting studs?  I know it has some sort of gimmick about holding the bridge on magnetically, but with the TonePros it's not so much the fact that the bridge "won't fall off", I just like the fact that the bridge sits parallel with the top of the guitar rather than tilting forward.

The resomax seemed pretty tight , although the Tonepros does sit ultra parallel (my Lion Cub has one)
