Black Dogs matching guitar
« on: June 17, 2012, 02:25:13 AM »
Hello all, greetings from brazil!
I kinda fell in love with the black dogs, but I'm thinking, before buying it, in which kind of guitar does the Black Dogs behave best?
Good combinations for this pickup:
Les Paul?
SG?
Flying V?
Explorer?

I'd like to nail the sound of Airbourne and AC/DC, some serious vintage hot vibe!
Thanks in advance!

I have a Black Dog in a Les Paul bridge and it's the business. Loose bass, not to loose though, rich heavy mids and more than enough highs to cut through. It's darkish, so might not suit a SG.
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

Out of those guitars it'll only really suit the les Paul. SGs, Explorers and Flying Vs are all mahogany and the black dog will just be a big boomy mess in those guitars. It's great in les paul though.

I think Les Paul would do the trick the best. Correct me if I'm wrong, but  a BD in a Strat type body would work also right?

It would work great in a strat if thats what you like.
I tend to prefer high output humbuckers or no humbuckers at all in strats though.
Its probably just psychological.
I've got this idea in my head that strats just sound better with higher output humbuckers to add some aggression. dunno.

what you need is the riff raff in any gibson type, a good marshall into middy celestions (v30, g12h, g12m) and no pedals at all (although a clean booster could be welcome to push a plexi or jcm 800 2203)

you shouldn't buy guitars to fit a pickup, in my opinion

I love the black dog, but it has a quite different character (I have both in les pauls)

I have holy divers in my LP Custom. But I have a Black Dog on the way to try. Is the Holy Diver tighter in the low-end? I don't want mushy, loose, or muddy low-end because I play a lot of high gain.

Wouldn't say the Black Dogs are mushy, but the bass is a bit loose. Plenty of mids too, but enough treble for a decent balance.

yes
they are quite similar in the low and center mids, but the dog is softer, cleaner and a bit darker
the diver has a bit more picking attack and more aggressive upper mids
when boosted, the differences aren't big with proper pedal adjustments
both sound pretty tight with a tube screamer and the output and brightness differences are gone with a 1 hour level and tone knobs tweak
not saying they would sound the same, but they can sound really close

For some bright and cutting AC/DC and Airbourne tones I would say Riff Raff like Eric.
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)
