Will my desired p/up combo work?

Hey guys, was after your expertise on BKP's. I'm using an LTD EC256 (Les Paul style'd) which has a mahogany body and neck with a rosewood board. It has stock p/ups in and sounds very bassy and dark. I'm looking to lift the bass a bit so I'm not merging with the bass frequencies as much (yeah, I may be invading in bass territory). I was thinking of getting an Emerald in the bridge and a Black Hawk in the neck.

I play mostly heavy rock and metal (with a touch of blues now and again) using the bridge to chug rhythm and the neck to get a smooth lead sound. I'm using a H&K Tubemeister 18 head and a Mesa V-Twin preamp as my distortion and '$%&# Yo.. I mean solo channel. As I know I can't get anywhere to try these out I thought I'd ask here as it seems to be the next best thing.

Rebel Yell in the bridge will lift the bass a bit. Cold Sweat in the neck.

I think you got quite some possible matches. It all depends on wether you want to take a hard rock approach or a more metal one. For hard rock I think most of the vintage hot lineup will work well. If you want a more modern tone I think you should considder nailbombs or cold sweats. The Rebel Yell might sit between the latter and the vintage hot pups. I got a alnico nailbomb in bridge position of my LP clone and I find it very aggressive, but at the same time versatile if you roll the volume back.

I love pushing mid output p\ups, there is something about that sound of a cracked amp and a 'vintage hot' p/up. But I do love a great metal sound. It's all about finding that balance!

I think you'd like a RY bridge and Emerald neck. A buddy of mine has that combo and it's quite nice.

Cold Sweat bridge and Emerald neck for me. Either that or a Cold Sweat set.

My vote goes to the Rebel Yell set. The RY bridge will push the mids a bit more than the CS bridge. Neck pickups are quite similar. The RY set appears to be more balanced between the pickups than the CS set which offers a strong contrast between both pickups.

Yes, I agree with this - the Rebel Yell set would be a good option I think. They are excellent in LP types.

I managed to pick up a RY bridge off a mate so it shall be going straight in. I think I'm gonna try it with an Emerald in the neck.

The Emerald neck has recently risen a lot in popularity. Makes me want to try one, too.

I have 3 suggestions
1) Blackhawk set - bridge has a nice treble lift to it and has similar output to Emerald - a bit more clarity too maybe
2) Emerald set - for all the reasons already suggested
3) Cold Sweat set - cant go wrong in an LP with these IMO

The most common pickups I've been urged towards are the RY, BH and Emerald.

I've got the RY for the bridge but having listened to samples of both the Black Hawk and Emerald I'm torn. I love the smoothness and fluidity of the Black Hawk but I love the rawness and scream of the Emerald.


God I need more guitars.....
