WHGR or OCD ?
« on: June 22, 2012, 01:41:20 AM »
Hi,guys  :)!
I've never had/heard an OCD (Fulltone overdrive) and ,i thought i had found one for sale but the guy forgot to answer my email..so,i found a WayHuge GreenRhino cheaper and looking good. Now,the OCD guy is back and i have to choose...So,what do you think ?OCD or WHGR ?I'm using a Maxon OD9,a Boss SD1 (HTH modded) and, rarely,a DS1 or a CoolCat.(I don't play modern metal).

If you have the OD9 which is already a tubescreamer type design I'd go for the OCD for versatility. The Green Rhino is just a super tubescreamer haha. I really like the sound of both and would flip a coin.

I've had both for quite a while, I think I can help you out here. What amp and guitar are you playing through? How would you be using the pedal? What do you want it to do?

While that's true, I find the OCD to be a very unversatile pedal. I feel as though you can use it for one or two things at most, while the GR can do many things. It's not just any TS pedal. The bass and mid knobs on it are honestly my favorite 2 knobs on any pedal I have or had.

First of all, thanks for your help, guys  8)!I'm playing with a Egnater Renegade 65 and, right now, mostly PRS guitars W/humbuckers.I got a DGT recently and it reacts a bit differently with my rig-settings and i think it's the reason why i'm looking for another OD.I guess the main thing i'm looking for is to fatten up my lead (overdriven) tone without too much noise. It has to be tight, thick, smooth but, still, agressive & not harsh ,full of overtones  :D!I guess,in words,we all want the same.. For exemple,i have a Crunch Box and that's not what i want.To me,it sounds unnatural. The OD9 is ok with most of my guitars but it's getting a bit noisy and a new flavour would be nice anyway  :).   PS: On the lead channel,i use the OD with a compressor (Tone Press) and on the Clean ch., the OD alone or coupled with the TP and the SD1.

I think you'd like the GR in the end. I feel like the OCD is a tad bit unnatural, where as the GR is the opposite. I also wouldn't associate the OCD with overtones. The GR also cleans up extremely well using guitar volume, and I just don't feel the same way about the OCD.

+1 (haven't tried the green rhino but as far as i'm aware it's a ts with more options... have the joyo clone of the ocd and it's a different type of pedal).

Thomann sells an OCD clone for 30€, called Harley Benton Ultimate Overdrive. I don't have the real OCD for comparison, but I have the Harley Benton and it's great, if only a bit a noisy.

Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Thanks, that's interesting.I didn't know it was a OCD clone. But i already have the original Danelectro CoolCat drive and it's supposed to be a OCD clone as well  :)! Btw,i just tried it with the DGT and they get along well (just a bit noisy too)!

Well I was told it's based on the OCD, but I have no way of checking if that is really true. All I can say is that the pedal I linked you too is more than worth the ridiculous low price.

I currently use mainly a T-Rex Michael Angelo Batio overdrive and the HB Ultimate. For gainier settings I like the HB more, and for boosting louder pickups as well, as it adds great definition. For very light crunch both do well. Only when boosting low output pickups I like the T-rex a bit more, as it is a bit more mellow and fuller in the mids.

if you already have a ts and an ocd clone is there any point in buying either pedal you're looking at? you might just be spending money for the sake of it.

fwiw i have the HB ocd clone and it's very nice. i like it more than my dano cool cat (which also died  ).

Well, that could be.. :? The OCD is a pedal i already wanted to buy/try years ago but there always was something in the way. That's why i got the CoolCat .But,in the end,i didn't use it anymore because it's too noisy and difficult to use on my pedalboard (& pots are on the wrong side). So,this time ,the opportunity is there to get that "famous"  :) OCD and i will try it !At least,if i don't really like it,it's easy to sell !

Danelectro are gits for it. The cool cat TOD is a Timmy for example. They do others...

My choice of OD would of course be a Klon(e). Which is best described as a 'more' pedal. It just gives you more of what you already have. At least you can't actually buy one of them even if you wanted to so it's at least slightly ethical ;)

By all means check out the MXR M77 Badass O.D. i just bought one a few days ago and am in honeymoon period, kicked my TS8 clone right out of my pedal board :)

it's pretty versatile and the low end you can dial in works wonders on amps with shared EQ's. you can have a nice but not too boomy clean tone and when you kick in the drive it gets all fat and nasty.

My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set
