59 slab boards with od
« on: June 26, 2012, 09:45:17 PM »
Here's a clip of the slab boards with some od (copyright infringement warning)
Incidentally, do you guys have any hints about how to record distorted mic properly? I used an SM57 for this clip, off axis about 1 inch from the grill, pointing towards the cone, but can't get it to sound quite as nice as it does in the room. What do you guys do?

I usually use an sm57 close but then add an ambient mic, a Rode NT2 or the Neumann TLM103. I find I have to spend ages though with the ambient mic moving it around until it's in phase but it's worth the effort

Yep, I like that but do they do the brootalz?  :)
I think I hate being indecisive.

Cheers guys

Thanks for the tip jjretro.... Is it poss to get a great sound using only one mic? I guess the other thing is that I record in my house and have to play fairly quietly.

Not sure about the brootalz! Only use a single channel amp, based around a fender deluxe reverb, so not so good on the heavily distorted stuff! Might have to dig out another amp.....

yeah just an sm57 is good enough for most things, I'd stick to using that but move it about until you find the sweet spot. Ribbon mics are also great as well ; P I actually prefer them but only the uber expensive ones that I can't afford like Royer and Coles
