There's only one song you need to be able to play in order to call yourself a guitarist.
Go on then.....
Tell us what it is, I'll learn it then quit while I'm at the top.

Are we talking about audience perception here Andy ?
Tears In Heaven ? Puff the magic dragon ? Lady in Red ?
I was in a hurry when I posted, and I've been out all day...
I kind of meant "whatever song you first manage to get through and can play it again" - if you can play one song on a guitar, you're a guitarist.
But seeing as you ask, er, I dunno "House of the Rising Sun"?? That seemed to be the one everyone was starting with when I was starting. (I never bothered though, I thought it was a boring song.)
I did three in one half-term holiday when I started, the first one was "King of the Road". Then "Greystone Chapel". But what I really wanted to learn was "Words" by the Bee Gees - that had the least and easiest chords of the songs of theirs I wanted to sing - and I could just about get through it without too many pauses by the end. I was pretty good on King of the Road by then, thoguh, but my fingers hurt like hell!!
When you can perform a song (whether in front of people or not) you're a guitarist.
Now, whether anyone would pay you for being a guitarist at that stage... that's a whole different question!
