er..

it's really a question of what the 20 guitar tunes are that you think display a level of infectiousness and involuntary toe tappingyness and/or saying to your self in hushed tones "f**king hell" to warrant them being awesome enough for you to think " I wish i sounded like that"

Hole in the sky (Sabbath)
sweet emotion (Areosmith)
See the signs (Cromags)
Jailbreak (ACDC)
Rosalie (Lizzy)
Dark night (The Blasters)
Mother (live version is epic) (Danzig)
anything by Floyd
Miserlou (Dick dale)
Roadhouse Blues (The Doors)
Get it on (Marc Bolan)
Little Wing (Hendrix)
Eastbound and down (go on, chicken pick that, dare you) (Jerry Reed)
Rubinas blue sky happiness (Satriani)
Don't Stop Believing (cheesy? yes, but the picked hook right after steve perrys intro is incredible guitarmanship)
Freebird (all of it, yes, including the solo)
Another Invented Disease (In fact anything off Generation terrorists) (Manics)
Play that funky music (Wild Cherry)
hundred mile high city (Ocean Colour Scene)
hanger 18 (Megadeth)

Get some classic old skool rock'n'roll under your belt and the world is your oyster.
I think I hate being indecisive.

I kind of meant "whatever song you first manage to get through and can play it again" - if you can play one song on a guitar, you're a guitarist.

But seeing as you ask, er, I dunno "House of the Rising Sun"?? That seemed to be the one everyone was starting with when I was starting. (I never bothered though, I thought it was a boring song.)

When you can perform a song (whether in front of people or not) you're a guitarist.

"House of the Rising Sun" was one of the first things I ever learned, way back in about 1980/81.  Never got past the intro though... and I haven't learned very much since.  :|

OK, if there's one song I can't play, but feel I should be able to play, to call myself a guitarist:

"Mississippi Queen" by Mountain.

End of.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

Yep, House of the Rising Sun for me also. Back in those days it was all done by book and ear - none of this youtube nonsense!

yeah, thems were the days...

You'd take yer ratty acoustic to school and trade licks with the other folks. "Hey! I can do this... (losers)", and "flip! is that all it is?".

And laughing at the punks who seemed to think you were a girly-wuss if you couldn't play a full barre chord (but who didn't seem to realise that there's something of difference between a major and a minor )

Sigh, happy memories... (wot's youtube, by the way?)

I had a cheapo Les Paul copy, never took it to school though!

A chap called Roger Hopkins once brought in his brand new Fender Strat - natural finish, big headstock, maple neck, black scratchplate - and matching Fender amp.  It caused quite a stir.  Another kid played "Alternative Ulster" on it.  We were duly impressed.  :D

I can honestly say that I wouldn't recognise any of those songs. Pretty sure I've never heard any of them. Hell, I've probably not even heard of half of those bands.

But then I'm not sure I give too much of a $%&# ;)

None of them?

Have you been heard "Living in a Box" by Living in a Box?  Or "Out of Touch" by Hall & Oates?   :P

Yeah okay I think I know the tune that the words 'get it on' are sung to (literally only those words) from the telly probably, and I think I've probably heard hole in the sky when I saw Ozzy back in 1994, but I couldn't tell you what it sounds like. did machine head do a cover of it?
Play that funky music, if it's followed by the word(s) wideboy or white boy, then yep heard of that.

All the rest? Not a clue :)

Just my own personal 20 that make the hairs on the back of my neck standup when i hear em lol

If you decide to give any of them a listen, turn them up loud.. with something like Jailbreak, it's essential to hear that old marshall grunting..

There are several in that list that it's probably near impossible to have grown up in any populous part of the west and not heard a bunch of times. You'll likely just not know the titles. Especially Freebird and Don't Stop Believing.

Just checked out both freebird and don't stop believing on youtube. I've never heard either before, was utterly unimpressed with both and haven't missed out by not having heard them in the last 32 years.

Do I need to point out at this point that I've never been into popular culture?
